I'm not comfortable with you calling that group of students the "Gally 7." This incident did not happen at Gallaudet. It happened at MSSD.
I happened to find out the names of the students involved, most of them are bright students, not "dumb," which makes this even more shocking. I am also pleased to hear that MSSD took proactive action on Monday by hosting a school-wide assembly and had discussions about hate crime, Jena 6, and other pertinent issues related to what happened last Saturday.
Ahem, it happened in the MSSD dormitory on the campus of Gallaudet University. In fact, in the MSSD memo it was addressed to the campus community, meaning the campus of Gallaudet University. Secondly, I didn't say the students were dumb as in mentally dumb. It's in the context of doing something stupid. I was also asking what would Al Jackson and Jesse Jackson say about 7 students, especially the 6 who are white who attacked a black student scrawling on him with 'KKK' and Swastikas on him with markers. Let's not put words into my mouth, -ck.
What MSSD did was right by being proactive because this is something you do not want let it get out of hand because of the nature of the incident.
The incident did not happened in Gallaudet but at MSSD unfortunately it sits on Gallaudet site and hence "Gallaudet". misunderstood.
I'm not surprised. MSSD always been a breeding ground for thuggery thats refined by the Kappa Gamma group.

A few years after I graduated college there was a silent social racism. You didn't use the word racism because it provoked the idea of discrimination.
What ever happen to the idea of telling it like it is? Racism is alive and well.
Right before 9/11 and GW administration defined what a terrorist was we had the incident in Jasper, TX. Then we had the church burnings in the South. Now we have had these issues crop up that some wish we could sweep under the rug. But we've defined them as "Hate Crimes".
How can a direct threat against any American be different because it's an American against and American. A threat is a threat no matter how you look at it. And little or nothing is being done to stop the growing violence against Americans by these Hate groups.

Frank..you're right. These things have to be discussed. Last year's dismissal of Dr. Anderson from the 3 finalists position hardly produced a yelp.

But, what do you know about journalism anyways? Since your tone tends to profess authority I'm holding you so accountable.
I see MSSD as a boot camp. The young thugs thats made the news here were waving the KKK flag and when they go beyond the Kappa Gamma crucible, the flag will be replaced with the ASL flag.
I'm excited this news is breaking out because what we really need to do is eliminate the breeding grounds for future soldiers of ASL that cast scourge and oppression upon people and groups that don't embrace ASL.
We shall see if Sharpton does get involved. I wouldn't be surprised at all, either.
Let's just hope the kids caught are taught a lesson on humility and tolerance, and not shoved out the door with the word, "racist" branded onto their asses for being nothing more than hormonally-strung out teenagers who exercised poor judgment.
If you want to pick on somebody, pick on the school, the teachers and the parents of the kids - especially the White kiddos. But these are essentially kids who still have a lifetime ahead of them.
No sense in branding them negatively for life. Racism exists in the public eye, and does happen in the private confines of a home, too. The trick seems to be educating kids about tolerating others, and understanding how they not only hurt others, but hurt themselves by issuing racial slurs or racially-motivated actions.
Gonna be interesting to see if Jackson or Sharpton get involved.

If you ever bothered to read what the mainstream media wrote about the Jena 6, which were a bunch of false stories, they hardly practiced any responsible journalism and instead prefer to fan the flames of racial hatred.

"Horseplay" doesn't usually involve seven individuals tying up an eighth and marking on him. If the police were called in, the victim must not have been a willing participant. I question why the seventh black kid was involved. At the very least it sounds like a case of bullying. Let's wait and see what happens before jumping to conclusions, Mike.
"Horseplay" is a subjective word.
"Hazing" is a word commonly mistaken for "horseplay," or even perhaps in the case of the GALLY 7, "reckless stupidity."
Normally, adults don't engage in horseplay in the same vein as the kiddos did at the school. If we were discussing adults, the issue would not revolve around "horseplay."
One more thing: how long does one need to wait for more information to make a decision? Are people not allowed to create, modify, change, adjust, adapt, conform, manipulate, or reconsider their opinions at a later time?
Unless you were actually a witness or a participant of the Gally 7 or Jena 6, the best you can do is make an educated guess. Only you can decide when, or what information suits your needs to formulate an opinion.

Deafspookie, bloggers are opinionated journalists who are not accountable to anyone but their owns and generally do not follow nor observe "editorial" rules like most mainstreamed media journalists out there, kissing up for money. Bloggers do it for the hell for it or for the love of writing about it without any editorial or third party refrains.
One last thing, Deafspookie, bloggers are humans, not automatons with enhanced spell-checking, grammar-editing and composition-improvising features with some legal and ethical built-in standard protocols.

Racism is a matter of opinion to anyone and also part of people's deep problem. I am third of interracial generation myself! I ofen speak out against diversity which is a new form of racism today. Let me say Dr. Anderson is black, so what! Dr.Davilla is Spanish, so what, and Dr Jane Fernandes is a woman so what! There are a lot of making excuses! I point out each has very qualified for that position but in political reality, it is very tough not easy to choose and who is able to get through the Deaf community in regardless of races,nationality, religions, and whatever! But at this happened at MSSD, they fail to provide quality of microism through education. Diversity always confuse a lot of people today! Racism is a part of American cultures for a long time due to deep root. Nobdoy has gut to pull out all weeds! As good example NBDA is a real racist organization they focus on color skin more important than Deaf things that makes me sick! The color of skin belong to people's personal needs! Forget about racism but there are plenty of big problem with lack of displines through education of the Deaf today because what kind of people who work at MSSD? That is matter of real concern about Deaf people's future more important!
OK-- I can accept "hazing" as an explanation. I'm still wondering why the one black kid was part of the group. As long as we're throwing out theories. . . The black kid's involvement leads me to wonder if maybe it wasn't initially meant to be a racial attack, but ended up looking like that? Or they got carried away. Kids can be so weird sometimes. They start out doing one thing then get swept away in the moment.
Or were they just drawing on this kid and he didnt' mind, but his parents freaked when they saw KKK? I am not ready to call it a racial incident yet. Tying someone up and marking on him, now that is bullying.
I do agree with those who have said racist behaviors are learned at home. However, if these are deaf kids who have grown up in deaf residential schools I'm not sure you can blame their families. Most kids have many role models-- parents, teachers, friends. . . When a child lives at home the parents have some control over who those role models will be.
When a child is sent away parents lose some of that control over who the child is hanging out with. Teachers and school staff may then become role models. Kids can pick up all kinds of new behaviors from a residential school that may not fit with a parent's value system-- especially if the parent and child have trouble communicating. And let's be honest. . . MOST teens have trouble communicating with their parents. It's a rebellious age.

Deaf residential schools have a long and ugly history. This latest episode is but one of countless that have saddled the Deaf educational system.
Your comment illuminated quite clearly some of the problems of Deaf residential schools.

You genetically inferior hearing impaired losers need someone else to pick on to make yourselves feel better great. I am going to chill and listen to my iPod. Being knowingly racist is one thing. But being uniformed and ignorant is another. The two are not the same thing.
