Hmmmm... Well, I have family throughout Canada, so if I had to leave I know I could go there. I've lived in Europe, but I wouldn't want to live there now. Then there's always Austrailia.

Go into detail. What is appealing about Australia? Aside from the climate being bass-ackwards?

I haven't been to countries other than Canada and Mexico(border towns used to be safe and fun). I would love to see a lot of South America and the Mediterranean countries before I could decide. Argentina, Peru and Chile sound wonderful and Columbia has cleaned itself up a lot in the past few years. Smain, Italy, Greece...I would love to spend time in all of them.

Hey Kona!
But in Canada you could marry your partner no matter what province you are in. Can you do that in Spain?

Yep, Brooklyn, it appears Spain beat Canada to legalization of same-sex marriage by a hair.
Michelline and I haven't been to many foreign countries, but if we were picking today, we would both pick London. We made an abortive attempt to move there back in 2006, but circumstances worked against us. We both loved the atmosphere of the city.

Your assumption that Holland will ever be under water isn't quite right. If anyone knows how to keep water out it's the Dutch. These people invented keeping the water out, they are masters at it, most of North Holland was stolen from the sea, they removed the water and sowith grew their country. They're prepared.

I'd have to say I would think of three options:
Amsterdam, though if the current mayor has his way and gets rid of the coffee houses, it would drop to the bottom of the list.
France, because, well, it's France, with all the attitude, glorious history and food!
New Zealand, which I've never been to, but it looks amazing, it has beaches and mountains, there are only four million people in the entire country (along with 50 million sheep), and mostly because every single Kiwi I've ever met has been awesome.

Already done it.
Costa Rica.... Although, if Jen didn't live here, it would not have been my first choice. I would probably said Canada, likely BC or Yukon.

Me? I would choose New Zealand. All the possible climates and geography on two islands and not crowded and they seem to have a better handle/attitude than even the Australians when it comes to racial and gender issues. I might be wrong on that b/c I've never been there or anywhere else outside the US. I don't even have a passport. My second choice would be England, third choice Canada.

Spain. No doubt about it. Barcelona to be precise.

For those who want Amsterdam due to their coffee houses, try Portugal. You will not be disappointed.
As for why Barcelona for me? The food. Pure and simple. There is no better food on the face of the planet (though I've not yet been to the Basque country and that promises to be even better.)

Hey, Christina and Red State Blues, you have great taste! I love my country (its not perfect mind you), but we are the only country to have a constitution founded on a bi-cultural document, The Treaty of Waitangi, which though fraught with much controversy and discussion as to its translation from Maori into English, at least it is an honest attempt. We were the first country to give women the vote and we honour civil unions, which are a legal alternative to marriage. I love the climate and scenery, where-ever you live in N. Z. you are only ever a short drive to the sea. In Auckland I am only a 5 minute drive from a beach. The multi-cultural aspects are enriching and diverse. Having said all that, if I had to shift I would stay in the South Pacific and choose to live in Samoa or the Cook Islands. Fantastic people and laid-back life-style.

To those of you who mentioned New Zealand - I went there for a three-week vacation last year (my first big leave-the-country vacation), and it is every bit as beautiful as you could imagine and then some.
I'd probably want to live in Japan, if I had any kind of money.

actually, my husband is beginning to look for employment in australia. melbourne, if possible. anywhere would be fine with both of us.
weather extremely similar to mine. i could get used to the seasons being different no problem. no more seasonal affective disorder than presently (it runs on both sides of the family). health care is a big factor. cadillac health coverage is cheap there. all i'd have to learn language-wise would be the slang.
i'd move to spain (6 yrs of it in school. i rock!) or the netherlands in a heartbeat though.

England, because it's similar but different in a dry, smart way and they have incredible accents, Japan, because I love the sense of honor instilled in the people, or Italy, for the food and wine and art and beautiful landscape. I'd have to investigate their political/economic systems further to see which was the best fit, but those are my initial choices.

New Zealand. My husband and I spent 6 weeks camping there, and would have tried to emigrate were it not for having lots of family back here, we loved it so much. First country where women won the right to vote; sort of like California, except upside down but with only 3 million people (then), and most of those were in a couple of large cities; plenty of beautiful, pristine beach-side property still available.

Sounds like I need to visit New Zealand.
I would choose the US, always (did choose it), and if I HAD to leave, Canada. Yes, I'm boring. I guess I fit with North America.
That's being realistic.
Fantasy? Wherein I don't have to worry about the fucking Vatican and abortion rights? Give me Italy.

I have tons of family in Ireland, and as much as I love visiting the auld sod and her natural beauty, I would not want to live there.
I have never been to Spain, but I am really keen to go there, I have been to France and Paris is without a doubt my favorite place I've ever been.
