loads of people collect every freaking new coin that they come out with. why? who knows.
i did buy my little grandbaby a 2005 silver liberty dollar in a pendant when she was adopted and became a u.s. citizen.
you should see the look on her little baby face on her papers welcoming her to the u.s by g.w. bush
she looks like an asian "home alone" poster!

I have been hearing the radio spots, too. One thing they don't address is the weight of the coins. I can just imagine having ten or so of them in my purse and it weighing about an extra pound. I seldom carry very many coins of any kind for that reason. Think of what they would make your pants do if you had very many in your pocket. You might need to wear suspenders and a belt.

Precisely why I don't carry coins in my pocket. On the rare occasion when I have to buy something with cash, the coins are in my pocket until I get home and then they get dumped in a jar. Eventually I take said jar to a bank.
But I do think dollar coins would be more likely to get spent than loose change, if we change our habits and realize we might have $4 or $5 in our pockets or purses instead of reaching for the currency every time.
I just think it's absurd to be spending money marketing something that isn't going to fly until you remove the $1 bills from the picture.

I was thinking about this a little bit over the weekend on the way to India. Europe has 1 and 2 Euro coins but no bills of that denomination. I find it extremely useful to have such coins. There's less wallet chunkiness and I tend to actually use the coins. Also, with so many vending machines (train passes, etc.) needing more than a dollar its a lot easier to have coins. Bill readers just aren't as reliable.
So I'm all for getting rid of the one and two dollar bills entirely in favor of coins.

My husband would like one of those new dollar coins they are testing in Austin.
I would support going to coins for $1 and $2 denominations. I would also love it if we went to having different size/color bills for different denominations.
