I think that's up to the individual blogger to decide. Everyone has a different comfort zone. I blog publically, but under a username and also have certain parts of my blog hidden from public view.

there are a lot of gray areas - some people, like me, choose to blog publicly, but only for the most part. my family has no idea about my blog, and neither do my friends in real life.

i blog publicly, i guess, for the internet population.

i have a seperate blog for my family and friends, completely disconnected from my other one.

both, however, are hidden from search engines completely.
