As much as I dislike A-Rod and the Yankees, and as much as I like and admire Mr. Ortiz, and as stupid as the MVP voting system is, and as ambiguous as the award criteria are, I still really dislike the DH rule itself, so it would be hard for me (even if I could) to vote for a DH for MVP.
Still, I think your reaction is dead-on. Who the hell cares if A-Rod gets the pretty little MVP trophy and the superfluous bonus money

I don't think Papi gives a shit about the MVP. He's the MVP in Boston, which is the market he cares about. He's above such things.
Had a chat with my 85 year old dad this weekend. He was bitching about how Manny stands there watching the ball after he's hit a long one, instead of hustling to first. I said "And how do you feel when Papi does that?"
"Somehow," he said, "I don't mind as much."
I think that says it all.

Yeah, I mean, MVP or not, Big Papi is almost universally loved (and those who say they don't love him are really just jealous), among fans and players. A-Rod... not so much.
And thus baseball's integrity is found to be, in some respects, self-policing. :P

while i agree that papi should have won the mvp (http://thoule.blogspot.com/2005/09/mvpapi.html), careful when you throw stats around like that if the yanks had lost 10-15 games more this past season, they would have been the same .500 team the sox would have been according to your prediction without papi.

Trevor, do not attempt to use logic with me while arguing Red Sox/Yankees. You should know better than that.
Also, I meant the Sox would have lost 30 more games because Ortiz had something ridiculous like 8 billion game winning hits.

8.5 billion, if you want to be exact. And if you subtract him from the lineup then Manny gets a pitch to hit maybe once a week.
What do you want to bet that the Rangers win a pennant before a-rod does?

I've heard this formula for value:
value = benefits - cost
If that's the case, Papi is by far a greater "value" than A-Rod.
