I don't really have any recollection of the Celtic's glory days. But I think it's kind of a chicken/egg conundrum. The fans stopped caring, so there's less money around for one, but perhaps more importantly nobody wants to play for a town that has no fans. I mean, imagine if you went to work every day for sixteen days and were thoroughly humiliated, called crap at your job, had no support system and just had to keep going? I hope they have the players and managers on suicide watch.
So, in short, I don't know.

Actually, the 1988 O's hold the American League record for most consecutive losses. The Major League record is held by the 1899 Cleveland Indians, who were an NL team at the time, and who lost 24 consecutive games from August through September of their season.

Kristen- you're killin' me here...Agreed, this is no longer a basketball town. I don't know why the interest in the C's has waned over the years (until last year they have been making it to the playoffs. Albeit loosing in the first round...) I am still a fan, still watch the games, and still read about them every morning. Not sure what that says about my mental health however. I personally blame Ainge. He hasn't given Doc much to work with in the past and I think it is just a matter of time till Pierce walks so that he too can get his ring. Makes me sad to see them struggling so much.

I think the Celtics PR department sucks. I never know when they're playing, what channel it's on, who's on the team, etc.
Contrast that with the Sox. We know everything about them. And people like to think "oh, that because Boston loves baseball". And I think that's wrong. I'm not sure the average fan actually likes baseball. I think they like the Sox because they're cool. And the Sox FO is a PR machine. They're always in the news for something or other.
The Celtics should be POUNCING on this losing streak. Because it has become a punchline. But they should be using it to get us into the Garden. Discount the tickets, make some fliers, and get fans into the stands to "make the difference that makes the Celtics win again" or some shit. People like a good story and they like to be part of that story. The Celtics should get on this.
That's what they're missing. A good story line for us to follow.

They are, Annette in a rather weird and futile way. They've paired w/ Southwest to fly you and a guest to Philly for a weekend stay and tix to a game. What they don't do is tell you that Philly's record is in the toilet too or explain the rational of getting Celtics fans out of town.
And their games are on channel 48-Fox Sports Net usually starting at 7:30. They play the Nets tomorrow at home.
I feel so alone.

There certainly seems to be no shortage of Celtics fans when I'm trying to squeeze onto the Green Line at Oark Street (often with a cello, no less) on home game nights. Either people are going to the games, or lots of people are getting dressed in bright green jackets and commandeering all the Green Line trains.
It's kind of funny, because I got totally bored with the NBA about a decade ago and only watch basketball when I'm with my parents, but at the moment I have the Suns who can't seem to lose a game and the Celtics who can't seem to win one.

As Bill Simmons first alluded to and then outright stated, the C's are tanking the season in order to be able to draft either Greg Oden or Kevin Durant. If they're the worst team in the league, they have, I believe, a 50/50 shot at either the first or second pick.
There's no other rational explanation for why Doc Rivers hasn't been fired.
Well, there's one: Nobody in the front office watches the games, which is entirely plausible.

I used to be an absolutely RABID C's fan, but the last few years...meh. Firstly, it's very difficult to watch the games when you hve to listen to Tommy Heinsohn. He's become the mad, dirty old uncle no one wants to sit next to at holiday dinners. He's really, really annoying. And that's enough to make me not bother to follow their schedule or tune in. So there's that. I do love Paul Pierce, but...he's not enough to pull me in anymore, and he's injured so... The wind went out of it for me when Reggie Lewis died. Anyway, they ARE young, and there IS talent there. Maybe they can pull me back next year or the year after, when these kids get some more experience.
Seems they've been "rebuilding" for 20 years now...and that's just not very interesting.

They're totally tanking the season to get a good spot in the lottery. And I think most Celtics fans know this or, even if they don't think the team is tanking, they know that the draft class means that losing is probably better for us in the end. So no one's that upset at this point.
And I do agree that the Celtics organization isn't very good about reaching out to the fans.

I'm sad about this. Anybody who watched the C's in the 80s should be sad about this.
There's a lot of blame to go around, but I don't think it is that the fans lost interest - I think the fans realized they were about to get screwed when they brought in Pitino and gave him the keys to the kingdom. God, that was one of the worst things that ever happened.
I would watch them - Tommy Heinsohn and all - if I at least felt like they were going somewhere and someone over there cared. But tanking the season just to get a pick that might pan out or might just be another immature kid who just wants to get paid doesn't strike me as "caring." Also, keeping Doc Rivers on doesn't strike me as caring either.
That sound you hear is Johnny Most spinning in his grave.
