Great response to this article! I agree, if you want to be a pro athlete, you should do everything you can to be the best and you shouldn't make excuses. HOWEVER, suggesting that Serena is some kind of overweight monster and her proclivity for cheeseburgers is the reason she's not the best is ludicrous. As you so eloquently stated - playing the way she does takes energy and guess where you get that energy? Food!
I'm only glad this article was on ESPN, rather than some site that might be frequented more often by young female athletes. All we need is another jerk talking about how a woman would be "perfect" if she just lost some weight.

//Seems it was just a few months ago when all anyone would talk about was Michael Phelp's seemingly inhuman intake of 12,000 calories a day. And all the guy did was win eight gold medals. Surely Whitlock would claim he could have won ten if he'd just cut back on the pancakes.//
Good analogy. But I wonder if comparing commentary on David Wells might also be interesting. The guy pitched the last perfect game at Yankee stadium, and has made All-Star and World Series appearances. Just to become a Major League athlete takes a special talent, but to rise to the top of the ranks as he did and have a lengthy career is an achievement beyond that. He might not be a sure-thing Hall of Famer, but Wells is not a flash-in-the-pan / cup-of-coffee guy either.
Like other major league athletes, he has had injuries, and experienced a decline as he got older. But that didn't stop everyone and their brother from making fat jokes, fat comments, etc. any time Wells came up, whether he was injured or not. Yes, Wells is *fat* where Serena is "built" (IMO), but his case should demonstrate why appearance doesn't always tell you the whole story about a person's physical abilities.
Wells isn't a very charming person much of the time, so maybe that's why hardly anyone ever comes to his defense on that front.

Snort. I never read Fox Sports anyway, so I'm not necessarily torn up about this article... and judging from Whitlock's appearance on the Dan Patrick Show today, he's totally okay with offending large numbers of people because any publicity is good publicity, et cetera. But I still find it unbelievable that someone feels that he can judge what accomplishments someone would've had if they were as hot as Beyonce.
Also, I agree with you, Sue.

//She'd rather eat, half-ass her way through non-major tournaments//
That dude needs to re-examine the photo accompanying your post. Ain't a goddam thing "half-assed" about Ms. Williams. Her majestic derriere controls the tides just as easily as it makes my heart do the flippy-flop.

That rear end is a lot bigger now than in that picture--not that there's anything wrong with that. That's an old picture, and Serena has put on quite a few pounds since her SI modeling days. But she's winning, so leave her alone!
