The program is great and works good.

Jai,
I'm currently updating the program to monitor certain directories and automatically convert files dropped into them.
Shouldn't be to hard to add batch conversion for whole folders ..
I'll keep you updated.

Well done with this converter! One question, does this converter convert at maximum resolution?

Christian,
Yes, the converter uses the native extent of the pictures in the HPI file. Unless hemera managed to squeeze in a high resolution picture in the few remaining bytes whose function I don't know that's the best quality you can get.

Thanks for your work, it's very much appreciated.
Is it me or the Hemera people are just plain stupid? First of all what kind of professional wants a truck load of pictures that had been clipped, but, just to tease you, they don't want you to use them that way... and second of all, the photos resolution is really crummy... actually it sucks monkeys ass... (I mean if you're in the printing business, if you're more dedicated to web design I guess the quality is bareable)
I can't tell you how much I hate this guys...
I thought this was a professional oriented thing. My sole source of comfort is that I didn't pay for the stupid software.

Maxi,
> First of all what kind of professional wants a truck load of pictures that had been clipped, but, just to tease you, they don't want you to use them that way
That's the thing I did not understand as well. The ability to export the images with any choosen color sounds nice - but if you want to compose pictures or need them for a non-uniform background that doesn't help. In addition they are not really making use of their #1 marketing argument (compared to other stock photo object collections out there).
>... and second of all, the photos resolution is really crummy... actually it sucks monkeys ass... (I mean if you're in the printing business, if you're more dedicated to web design I guess the quality is bareable)
For screen-/web-design the quality is quite ok - but you're right. The extent/resolution makes it hard to use it fr anything more than thumbnails in print.
In addition the picture quality .... at least has room for improvement. The clipping mask is 4 bits (16 shades) only, the picture it self is (heavily) jpeg compressed and w/o embedded icc profile and IMHO the pictures sometime lack the sharp, crispy and stunning look know from "real" stock photos.

Very nice program, but I have one question: how comes that the converted files change color when opened in Adobe Photoshop and keep the original color in other programs?
Chris |
12.31.06 - 3:35 am | #
|
|
Chris,
I have no Photoshop license to test with - therefor I don't know. :-(
How does the color change? Are the colors totally wrong or do they just change value and saturation a bit. If yes then I'd assume that Photoshop uses the embedded ICM information to render the picture in the correct color space as other programs do not. If that's not the case I have to try with PS somehow.

Udo

Hi Udo!
This is just to let you know that the program crashes if the drag & drop format was set to e.g. *.tga -> "Keep Original Format" works perfect.
Anyway, you did a great job - thank you!

Kunta,
the app shouldn't crash when encountering something else than HPI files - that's really strange.
Could you send me the .ERRORS file in the application directory if it exists. This should allow me to find the exact source of the problem.

Udo

Hi Udo!
I'm sorry, but it crashes if I drag&drop e.g. a .jpg from the Hemera browser. So "Keep Original Format" only works perfect if I drag&drop an .hpi file.
.ERRORS file size was 420 MB so before my last attempt I've deleted it but after next crash it has 82 MB - still too large to send...
My system:
P4 (HT), 3GHz, 1GB RAM, XP Home(SP2)
Hemera browser version:
3,2,1,18 10000 + LeadUpdate.zip see: http://support.encoreusa.com/kb....m/kb.asp?
id=394
Hope this helps anyway.

Hi Kunta,
thanks for the hint with the JPEG file. The version which I used was already to new to have that bug - so I didn't encounter it.
You can download a new version w/o this bug here:
http://
udos.users.dolphinmap.net...up_0517beta.exe
This version adds ZIP file support (simply drop a zip with hpis to the app) and an (incomplete) help in addition to some bugfixes.

Udo

As I don't have Administrator privelege, I was not able to install the software that came with Hemera hoto Objects 50,000.
HPI Converter installs easily (even without Administrator privilege) and looks nice, but doesn't load HPI files. Instead, it gives the error message, "File class does not understand #longPathOf:"
This even for files with very short filepaths and filenames, and whether I use Add Files, Paste Files, Drag&Drop to the program window, Drag&Drop to the program icon, or open the HPI file from Windows (choosing HPI Converter to open with).
Fortunately, Batch Convert does work, so I am using that.

Hi,
the error message seems strange. In those cases HPI Converter normally writes down an .ERRORS file in the program directory. Could you send me that file? If it's too big you can try to delete it the file and recreate the error.

Udo

Hi! Great software - many thanks - converting to PNG will help me a lot.
Just one thing though.. the converter seems to output my images (Hemera Photo Objects 50,000 Premium Image Collection) at 150dpi, although when I output images manually from the Hemera software I can get up to 300dpi.
Is there a way that I cen get full res images from your marvellous app please?
Thanks

HPI Converter always uses/saves the full resolution image. Only the image property is set to 150dpi. This dpi setting is only used to calculate the image dimensions (in inch or cm).
However there is a misunderstanding with the DPI Setting in the hemera App. If you choose different dpi settings in the hemera app it scales the image data up or down - unless you choose "Use image's full size". In this case only the image dimensions change based on the dpi setting. The number of pixels stays the same.
So to wrap things up. The dpi setting of 150dpi is pure cosmetics - it doesn't affect the number of pixels. And the png exported by HPI converter is always the full quality image.

Udo

Thank You for this program.
But objects whit shadow do not convert correctly.
Instead of shadow there is black area.

Regarding "missing" shadow:
All images have a full black (RGB 0/0/0) "shadow". It's just the alpha transparency that decreases.
So my assumption is that you used an app which does not take the alpha channel into account. Which app did you use?

Udo
