Try taking magnesium and potassium supplements before bed. And when the muscle does start to cramp, try to stretch it before it seizes up too much. Activating the opposing muscle groups will tend to relax the cramping one(s).

Ouch! I used to get those when I was a kid. I've heard that such cramps can be due to a lack of potassium, as Mel suggests above. Eat more peanut butter and bananas...

If these are calf cramps (as I used to get at night as well) you should immediately point your toe and stretch them out. This works for me. Takes only about 20 seconds before the worst of it is over, and you can go back to sleep.

wow! 2 comments in one vist - I should stop by more often. I pinch my upper lip - I'll show you Wednesday night. Difficult to explain, looks silly - but it works.

I suggest drinking some orange juice diluted with tonic water after heavy exercise. I would love to see where to pinch the upper lip!
