kelli:
You know I have road rage everyday from the sickos that get into their cars and tailgate me, speed, run red lights, zoom past stop signs, speed down my road (someone is going to get killed) and so on. I travel around the usa, as you know and my palms sweat as I approach the "welcome to Rhode Island"...it should be, "watch your ass and drive in defense..RI drivers are out to kill!!"
Of course my husband laughs at me and comments everytime he is in the car while I drive. I curse and pause at him..he drives just like them...if the world only knew! I wont blow my cover here...SPOT!!!!! annnnngreeee drrriiiiveerrrr!!
ps.I am from california and if the state of RI were on the highways there, everyone would be in jail!!!

Gravatar I am so glad I escaped with only the small window broken out of my car. I lived in purgatory, uh, RI for a year. Now I'm in FL and only have to dodge old folks and tourists. At least you only have 27 days.

Gravatar Kelli - You are right - Rhode Island drivers are the worst in the U.S. However they are not the worst in the world, as I will explain. We lived in Rhode Island for about a year and were astonished at the bad driving, which we could not understand. About two years later, we moved to Lisbon, Portugal, and we saw the light! The Portuguese drivers are just like the Rhode Islanders. As long as you have two of your car's tires on the sidewalk, it's a parking space. One way only? Just back up - as if the car is pointing in the right direction, you're legal.

Gravatar RI is nonetheless among the states with the lowest traffic deaths per capita. People everywhere adjust their driving habits to a given level of risk. Got ABS - great, go faster, brake later. Own a big ol' SUV that is safer due to mass and structure - great, pretend its a sports car and see if you can get it upside down. Its hard to go fast or far and still stay in the county we call RI so the risk exposure is less than crossing Montana at warp speed... so apparently we're sloppier at the simple stuff that would get you killed elsewhere.
Oh, and we got a bunch of them Portugese folks here too. Some of them must offer driving lessons.
And lets not talk about RI's seekrit traffic law - left turn on red.

Gravatar I know EXACTLY why RI's statistics are so bad. My dad lives in East Greenwich.

He IS THE worst driver, EVER. You know how when you ride in a car with someone, you want to ride shotgun? My ex and I used to (quietly) argue over who had to sit in the front seat when we were with him. It was THAT BAD.

I really think Connecticut drivers are the worst, though. It's like you cross from RI to CT and traffic slows from about 80mph to about 20mph, everywhere, whether there's any traffic or not. WTF is up with that???

Gravatar Is it really any surprise that people in Massachussetts are bad drivers? After all, they have Chappaquiddick Teddy as a role model...

(That's my low-blow joke for the week.)

Gravatar Well, in Michigan they may *know* the laws, but they certainly don't follow them. Plus, by my estimate, only 1 in 10 can actually make a left turn, on the red or not.

They tailgate at extreme speeds. (I would like to have one of those Bonneville Salt Flats cars just so I could see if they tailgate at 600+ MPH.)

NO ONE uses turn signals, so far as I can tell. (Well, me and my wife, but we grew up in Illinois, and NOBODY moves into Michigan, they only move out.)

Finally, parking. George Wallace only needs slight editing here. ". . . can't even park . . . straight."

Gravatar From a Texas gal(trust me we knooow bad drivers) in defense of Rhode Islanders. The entire time I spent in Newport visiting my Navy kid, I marvelled at the courtesy of the drivers. Got stuck in one of those teeny little roads and thought would be there forever. The very first car stopped and allowed me out. Amazing.

Gravatar If you thing Rhode Island is bad, try Israeli drivers. And it's not just because we're afraid the bus in front of us will explode either.

Gravatar I visited Providence Rhode Island last fall and the first time in my life, I could not adjust to the driving. Not only are the drivers bad, but the road network makes little to no sense: one way streets that lead away from major steets, areas where all roads force you onto 95, dead end streets. You drive this maze while other drivers are doing 100MPH.

Gravatar massivetwoshits = worst drivers ever. such douchery.

Gravatar Ok, so I'm from Long Island and moved to Rhode Island a few years ago. I was surprised at the comments about RI. Now RI drives are by far and way the worst drivers I have ever come across, I mean far and away the worst, but for different reasons that most people here said. I don't mind the fast speeds but what gets me is the absolutel unpredictability of the drivers here. That is the really dangerous part. I've seen drivers come to a sudden stop to let a car enter the main road from a side street. Now I'm talking about a road with people doing 40-50 miles an hour, with no traffic lights, no stop signs... no reason a car in front of you would suddenly stop. Now when someone decides in their own mind that its a good time to stop to let someone in, well the 4th,5th, and 6th cars back cannot read that persons mind, so what happens... well all of a sudden everyone comes to a sudden stop and accidents happen. I've seen it. I've seen this stupidity on I-95!!! Yes, people have come to a dead stop in the left lane to let someone merge. And whats funny is that I've met many people that have moved here from other states and I always bring this up to see what they say and EVERYONE has said the same thing. RI drivers are the worst. They're unpredictable and can't think 5 seconds ahead. They also seem to spend their lives never leaving little RI so maybe the gene pool needs some upgrades. Last note, other than the horrendous driving, it's not a bad place to live lol.
