I too am a professor at URI and am deeply disturbed by the behavior of Mr. Vocino. I cannot believe that this is tolerated in the classroom.
My classes are taught based on learning objectives...not my personal beliefs. Perhaps Mr. Vocino should take a deep look at why he wants to be a teacher if he is not teaching the material.
I was stunned by this young man's column. This professor acts more like how a middle school class clown might conduct a class when the teacher has stepped out of the room. Equally shocking are the letters from a couple of URI professors who use the student newspaper to attack and belittle the student. This story is really disturbing.
K in RI...you should take advantage of your authority and have a discussion with the administration at URI. If not, you might be considered part of the problem.
Again, it is not enough to have a few conservatives blog their outrage..do someting about it!!!
I have heard time and time again how vocal the "lefites" are and that is why they "take over". Perhaps the conservatives should do the same??

I will do my best to be heard... This is hard for me as I am not an outspoken person. For now, if I see inflammatory letters to the editor from the Cigar (the newspaper), I will respond to defend!

The prof teachs film studies and library science? How about Home Ec and Forestry? Is URI that desperate for faculty?
What's particularly bad is that you have a class full of students whose transcripts will claim that they learned the subject matter, but their actual grasp is questionable at best. 'Professor'Vocino wasted their time and their tuition.
What Nate had to go through at URI was absolutely disgusting. If he were anything other than a white Christian male (or in LibSpeak, a member of the "oppressor class"), that professor would not only have been fired, he'd probably also would have been bought up on charges, too! I don't care if you're gay or straight, male or female - how could anyone ever make excuses for that kind of behavior in a school or workplace? Just because someone works at a public college, shouldn't make them immune to normal workplace standards that everyone else has to live by. If anything, that should be more reason to abide by them - as the taxpayers are in part paying their obscene salaries anyway. That a disgusting pervert like that still teaches anything at URI, and isn't there mopping floors, doesn't say very much about their school, or about what value they place on protecting students from predators, and perhaps even teaching them, does it?!!!

I agree with you on everything but your elitist comment about how he should be mopping floors instead of teaching.
There are some people in this world that can only mop floors...it does not make them that kind of scum.
Please be careful..sometimes I read comments coming from people who believe because they had the best of everything and are able to do great jobs that makes them better than people who are good but have not had the same kinds of luck. I could keep up a pretty big blog with that.

Absolutely no offense intended whatsoever towards regular "floor moppers." I think I was thinking more along the lines of making him do it, because he'd probably hate doing real work. Frankly, I admire janitors and the like, who actually work hard for an honest dollar, far, far more than overpaid, elitist neo-commie, tenured snobs, with no sense at all of what life in the "real world" is all about.
