The U.S.A. provided you all your protection from those other countries at the time, and the no fly zone was suppost to help vs Saddam, this isn't going to last, which would make your situation alot different then the last 12 years you talk about.

Hi Kurdo,
It's thru that - in theory - the Kurds had a recognized autonomy under the Baath regime. But it's also a given fact that Saddam has always been able to divide the Kurds (remember when Barzani's clan joined him against the 'Talabani' people?) in such ways that it never got any futher than this theory.
It's thru that - I've been able to witness this myself - the Kurds have been able to build up a modern state in the past 12 years. But it's also a fact that this has only been possible because of the security of the no fly zone and the fundings of the Oil for Food program.
Maybe instead of considering to be a part of the federal Iraq to come or to call for an independent state, Kurds should aim for some sort of UN (not US!!) protective statute for the upcoming years. This way, they would be able to work further on their internal democratic and economic processes to become a stronger and more stable partner in future negotiations with it's neighbours.
