What about establishing an independent Kurdish State within Iraq for now? Any possibilities? Our states have the rights to make their own laws (as long as it is not a violation of our constitution) maintain their own police and militias and run their own governments.

Politicians will always do that unless they are strictly controlled. After all, that is why most of them go into politics.
The only cure is to make them declare all their income and financial interests. Of course they will fight against that, but we do have this control in the UK, after a number of scandals. They weaken when they realise they risk being voted out if they are too corrupt.

Well I was told two different versions of what the candle means.
One was hope.
The other was that the candle represent hope that their enemies will be vanquished by the fire of the candle. And I am paraphrasing the last one but it was something like that.
I think it all depends on your point of view.

Sistani looks really scary... even scarier than late ayatollah Xomeini. It's funny to see that all those big shia parties at the iraq's alliance list see this iranian cleric as their (symbolic) leader.

Ayatuaalah Sistani is a respected religious leader by Iraqi Shiite community and other Iraqis.
I think it is unfair to try attack him personally. We also don`t like anybody mockering our Kurdish leaders.
Try to judge people for their policies and be prejidiced towards their person or religion. We should learn communicate or criticise in a civilised way. Kurds are usually very polite and we should keep doing so!
Sorry I mean not be prejuidiced toward any person or religion. Tolerance and mutual respect is civilized.

If you study the shia theology you will understand why religious figures are so revered in Shia sect of Islam.
the important thing is that we Kurds stick to our demands for federalism, secularism and democracy. I think many other Shia groups also favour separation of state from religion.
