Grace Cavalieri always surprises and disarms us. Her prose poem "Say What You Will" takes us on fashion show across decades of women we know and then suddenly, the zinger -- their absence, their deaths.

Often her titles surprise as well as in "The Telephone Stalker Is Head Over Heels In Love" or "Other People's Arms." These are three fine poems but don't stop there! Buy her books, she is an author many times over and her work sings to you such that you will want to have it near by for comfort, for pleasure, for love.

Really interesting!
While Grace was reading, there was another woman speaking a different poem at the same time.
The other woman had a lisp and a not pleasant sound.
But also while Grace was talking a different cut, there was this wonderful guitar playing and then a very pleasant woman singing a folk song, while Grace's sweet voice continued.... Very new musicish.

Grace on Roland Flint: When I visited Grace's home, I felt eternity in her living room too. I do whenever I'm around Grace. The poem about Roland's son is so powerful. DM, i take it you mean you didn't like the poem; but invoking classic slapstick comedy to describe your resentiment is perhaps the most complimentary way to talk about about CB's work. moreover, the use of an egg yolk (and not, say, a pie) has interesting psychoanalytic connotations. finally, i wonder how sensible it is to pray to the stars. if "stars" is a synechdoche for "heaven" and thus a metaphor for God you've once again wrapped back around to a Lacanian mythos, but there seems to be a hint of irony here, which would indicate that you are not in full agreement with Lacan's phallocentric model of the universe. it appears that in Mr. Bernstein's poem he attempts to deconstruct or "debunk" Lacan's theories. I can't figure out whether your response is attempting to debunk Mr. Bernstein's reading of Lacan, or whether you are using your metaphors to very cleverly (and even in a Bernsteinian manner) continue Mr. Bernstein's critique.

Didi, this is an amazing issue. I have not had the chance yet to read all of the poets but I wanted to write to say that David Need's first article on Rilke is excellent. Rilke's poem "I live my life in growing orbits" is one of my favorites. The realization that David is dedicating his column to Rilke was like waking up to Christmas in October.

On the poetry front: Barbara Reyes might just well have proved herself as poetry's Helen of Troy. Stunning material. Amazing.

I also enjoyed Mark Young's "À la suite de l’eau, les nuages."

I will be reading and commenting about other poetry later on.

I just have started through the issue out today. Barbara Jane Reyes is a stand-out among the poetry selections I've read so far. She knocks me off my feet. I really enjoyed Michael Parker's column, too. Great addition to the journal. I've not yet listened to any MP3 recordings yet. I prefer to read them first so I can go through the readings in order of whom I want to hear first. But...bravo! Great job.

I really liked all of the poems by Barbara Jane Reyes, especially "Litany of the Blessed Virgin remix." Powerful devastating poems.

Also especially liked Anny Ballardini's poem "The Letter."

Didi, I don't know how in the world you can keep up the pace of creativity that you do. I am so proud to have been involved, albeit off and on, since you began your sites.

My book, Voices in My Head - Creativity and Madness will be available for purchase October 1, 2005.

The book focuses on turning nonverbal emotions into verbal and pictorial descriptions of affective illness.

The book in its entirety shows my particular bipolar cycle over a five year period. Each poem stands on it's own, too. If you are not in the mood to read view the original artwork that has been generously donated by fellow poets and artists with affective disorders.
