The gates were merely toothpicks for my boys. Neither one of them ever stayed contained.

I'm glad that he wasn't hurt, but sorry that he owes you a new baby gate.
We had gates up for Lilly when she was younger. But now she knows where she's not allowed and the gates are long gone. Other folks come over and are amazed that she won't go upstairs or in the living/dining room. I was amazed when the basement flooded that she didn't go in there either. We've never told her that was a no area, we've just always kept the door closed.
I think we had our gates up for just a year before she got it.
I don't know how long it takes to train humans though.

Nothing teaches like experience to teach you.
(And I am all caught up with you! Yay! Missed you -- and sorry to have been away so long!)

I'm so laughing! We have a gate up so Meme won't do the stairs. Buddy is forever leaping them (and 9 times out of 10 falling on his face) whereas Bear ever so delicately clambers over whilst protecting her ladyparts. At least #1 seems to have figured out that falling hurts - well, Buddy is young still!
