They asked YOU to create the slide show back in Sept...I would be upset that they now want to give it to a kid. Let the kid make a slide show with his/her own pictures.
This was your baby, you took those pictures with your creation in mind.
Okay, maybe give snot nose a copy, but I would still make the slide show you had in mind.
Oh yeah...I'd be ticked. I know whenever I take pictures, I am already forming a story in my head. you spent the whole year doing that trying to get the best pictures and then some kid will not do the story you had in mind. Is there any way you can make sure when you hand over the pictures that the kid KNOWS to include everyone?
First, you do have a right to be upset. They should have told you earlier in the year that the plan had changed.
Second, do you have to give the kid all the pictures? Even though it will take more time, I'd be selective with the pictures I sent. And I'd include a note saying how hard you had worked to be certain to get a picture of each of the kids and how much it would mean to you if he/she could include everyone.
You aren't nuts nor are you overreacting. I would be irritated too, to put it mildly.
Because I am sure you put your heart where your eyes were, and that's with every single one of the 3,000 pics. And who knows what this kid is going to do, he/she will be most likely tired after the first 500, just like you said it...
Give the kid a copy, don't hand everything over!
You're definitely NUTS - but that has absolutely nothing to do with this post! 
LB... you do not have to give the kid all 3000 photos. As a matter of fact, HE would probably be GRATEFUL if you chipped it down to about 500! Then YOU would have SOME say in what was going into the slide show.
I wonder... and I'm NOT saying this is the case by ANY means -- but I know this is how things OFTEN work for me... so, I wonder... when they asked you to take these pictures, did they actually ask you to MAKE the slide show? Or did they ask you to take the pictures FOR a slide show, and you assumed they meant for you to make it? (cuz that's what I would do - and it would be a misunderstanding that I would end up feeling hurt about when it wasn't really their fault... for real - I've done this more times then I can count!) But if they really did ask you to MAKE the slide show, I think I would speak up and SAY something! That would not be out of line... this was a MAJOR artistic endeavor! I do understand the school (probably the audio visual dept) wanting a student to be involved in this... I mean that does make sense... BUT NOT if they had ASKED you to do it. That's not fair... not that life is.
I'd have your same reaction. I'd be peeved. I agree with others, if this is taken from you, do not hand over all 3000 pictures.
My blood pressure is going up just *thinking* about this. It's wrong I tell you. Wrong.
