Gravatar You've said it all and then some!

Our Church is currently begging for Sunday School teachers. (they announced today that we need 19 teachers) There are parents who are putting their kids in the classes, but for whatever lame excuse are not helping. Most of the parents aren't even in Sunday School classes themselves! There was one mom who would drop off her kids and then sit in the parking lot and read!!! But she couldn't be bothered to help teach...while we were doubling up classes because we were short.
There's another mom who homeschools her 5 kids and thinks that she's done enough to teach her kids.
and of course we have all the same lousy excuses that you've heard too.

It makes me think..."If you're expecting the Village to raise your child, you better hope you don't get stuck with the village idiot."

Gravatar Amen. Amen. Amen!

Gravatar Those who are too busy with their work, play, social lives, etc. to get involved with their children's education aren't to be resented; they're to be pitied.

Just think about it a moment. If I'm too busy to be bothered with my children's activities, should I be surprised when those children grow up and find themselves too busy to be bothered with me?

Gravatar I LOVE your fire, lady. I think this is my very favorite thing that you ever wrote (and I'm a slacker! )

Can you print this out and put it in the PTO newsletter? Not kidding.

Gravatar Great post and yes, everyone needs to help to make it work. I'll admit to not doing nearly as much as you - but, I certainly get myself to the school to help out. At my kids schools there are A LOT of helpers to spread the burden. Too bad that isn't the same for you.

Gravatar Well said!!!

Gravatar Great post!
I am on the PTO board at 2 schools and am lead on 4 "chairs".
I get very annoyed when other board members never seem to have time to cover the duties they signed up for.
Our 2 vice presidents are the worst about it. No, I can't come to school at 2 every other Tuesday to walk Chuckie Cheese around to every class room like I did last year. How about rescheduling the rat to come when You can be there? No, I can't spend 6 hours stuffing your fundraiser packets. You'll have to reschedule your spa day, sorry!
I suspect these 2 of volunteering for VP because it looks good on their resume.

Gravatar You need to send this post home with every child. Piss some parents off...but they wouldn't have helped anyway!

Gravatar AMEN AMEN and AMEN. I understand life is busy but that is just life. They should stand up and be involved.

Gravatar Oh yes. Amen to all of it!

Gravatar Very well put. Thanks from one elementary school's volunteer coordinator and mom of three!

Gravatar How many times I have thought the exact same thing! Sometimes, it truly is a matter of, if the core volunteer group doesn't show- stuff would get cancelled. I don't think the "busy" parents have a clue, or maybe they do and they don't care.

Gravatar I don't have kids, but you're right... there are parents who do whatever they can and there's the ones who don't have time, but have time to get their nails done, etc.

Well said!!

Gravatar Oh, honey I've got to send this to all of my PTO mom friends. Volunteering and altruism is truly a lost art...my own mother was never chairperson of less than 3 committees at a time when I was growing up and she was School Baord President to boot! You tell 'em sister!

Gravatar Good for you that you take time away from 3 jobs to go to the school and volunteer. I bet your co-workers really love you. If I miss a day of work it's $63 out of our budget. Money that we cannot afford. We are barely getting by. Plus, I don't like kids. Yes, I have two and I love them. But, no, I don't feel it's fun to go and help at school. Why don't they think of things that I could do at home to help, where I wouldn't be around the other parents and children. I would be happy to do that. I feel that being a teacher is a calling. I also feel the being a helper or volunteer at school holds a bit of that same calling. You don't want me around your kids. I have no patience, and they all drive me crazy. Ok, I'm done. Patty
