In a not too distant past Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland would tar and feather or even commit honour killings simply if a one found to be having a relationship with the other.

Gravatar That's true, but it's an isolated case in a long, sectarian/economic war. It is not replicated throughout Christian nations where Protestants and Catholics co-exist, and the organized Catholic and Protestant churches in Northern Ireland decried these events.

Gravatar Here in Britain where we have a very differnt 'culture' than most Islamic nations, and here Islamic leaders also decry rape, honour killings and terrorist activities.

Christiantity has been just as barbaric in the past, just look at some of the things that have happened in my country over the last few hundred years in the name of religion. Though we have remained a Christian nation it is our 'culture' has changed.

Gravatar Yes, it's changed for the worse. Immorality, crime, divisiveness, terror. Give me that old time religion.

Gravatar >Yes, it's changed for the worse. Immorality, crime, divisiveness, terror. Give me that old time religion.

And you think those things didn't exist in the past, are you having laugh?

Yes lets go back to the days when a womans place was in the home, where they didn't have the vote, a time when we had slaves, and where you could be shipped off to another continent for stealing a loaf of bread.

Are you on drugs?

Gravatar I have a friend who claims Islam won't heal itself because it's a good deal for the men. He claims that, at heart, Islam is about male domination, whether its polygamy, rape, beating women, etc. Islam will put up with a lot of Westernizing but, when you touch the woman issue, it all falls apart. If he's right, that may explain mainstream Muslim silence in the face of atrocities -- they're circling their wagons around misogyny. The same would hold true for all these "cultural" things.

Gravatar Does Islam teach that beating women and rape is OK?

Gravatar I think you're right, Bookie.

Steve, Christ was the greatest liberator of women. The day he spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well, the mores of society crashed and were never the same. The Christian church has always had women leaders and has recognized their unique capabilities and strengths. (And while Jews constrained their women more, there are many heroic women in the Old Testament. Proverbs 31 is a testament to the strength of women, and the respect they deserve.) Christian nations gave women the vote first, and Christians led the battle against slavery.

And Islam, which you defend? Ha!

If you're going to go historic on us, it might serve you well to actually read a little history.

Gravatar Christianity has been used as an excuse for many atrocities in the past, Christina nations have for over a thousand years viewed women and blacks as lesser beings, but that is not to say Christianity is evil.
And there is no doubt that Islam in an excuse used for many terrible acts being commited today, but again that is not to say that Islam is evil.

People can be evil, and religion is one of the biggest excuses they use.

Gravatar Religion is only an excuse. The Muslim religion is only the current biggest offender.

Oh, and to answer Steve's question, no...Islam does not teach that beating women and rape is OK. But the current leaders of Islam most certainly do!

No, the real problem is that it is men doing it. In the Western world, many Christian sects preached that sex and lust were bad, and so Christians rejected it, and when women wanted equal rights, we gave it to them, even though it meant we wouldn't be getting as much sex when we wanted it.

Go ahead...research this. In the long run, it is the Christian faiths' anti-sexualism that allowed Western men to relinquish an iron-grip on the fates of women, and in those subcultures where men are NOT anti-sexual, such as the Morman Fundamentalists, you see a return to female repression.

Muslims highly value their sex objects, and have no interest in allowing women even the least bit of freedom. Women in such societies are property, nothing more. Until Muslim men have some vested interest in seeing women rise to their level, as their western, mostly Christian counterparts did, they will continue to rejoice in these kinds of acts.

SASS has Spoken.
