In essence, the enemy attempts to bog us down in their narrative. We must break free of that trap and make our own news, fight on our own ground. This involves not just showing the good news, but also side stepping the traps that will be inevitably placed in front of us by our enemies, domestic or foreign.
I don't think most people want to lose in Iraq, Laer. I think they've decided (incorrectly) that victory is impossible and want it to be over. It's an immature and poorly-informed view but it's a pretty typically American one.
