Gravatar Can you explain to me how the invasion is "putting an end to this sort of thing"? Our troops are dying in Afghanistan supposedly supporting the very government that has sentenced this student to death for religious dissent. Remember, Afghanistan is a fundamentalist, Islamic country, not a democracy, and we're deluding ourselves if we think we can turn it into a democracy, any more than the Soviets were able to turn it into a communist state. Just like the Soviet occupation, the current one is all about power and control, not freedom or democracy.

Gravatar A lower court of Islamists have sentenced the man, not the government of Afghanistan; just a point of fact.

What would you do, Ross? Let the Taliban continue to rule the place with horrors much worse than this, offering a safe haven to al-Qaeda? Is that really a viable alternative? From a stronghold in Afghanistan, the Taliban could much more effectively destabilize Pakistan in its quest for a terrorist Islamist bomb. It could foment further attacks on Western interests globally. It could beat women for letting an ankle flash and hang homosexuals.

The current situation, while hardly ideal, is far, far better than that. The world is not convenient or easy, Ross. It's a nasty place full of difficult choices. You took the foolish kumbayah choice. Happy beheading.
