Listen here Anne just because your husband has had to borrow money to help your mum in her retirement it does not give you the right to say nasty things about other people. Your mother had a cash in the hand job for many years and your father had a Commonwealth pension and a generous redundancy payment. Your mother should have kept some of the money as a pension and taken the rest in a lump sum. I am sorry if your mother has run out of money but she should have been more careful with her money.
Another worthless Liberal opinion - you are responsible even if things go wrong. Things like annuities where you get taxed (often for the third time) if you withdraw your funds. Governments have created an impossible maze of legislation which may be comprehensible for merchant bankers, and accountants, but not for the rest of us.
