Gravatar It sounds like you guys are making good progress.
When she bites, is she coming to you, or is it only when you reach for her? I finally figured out with one of our biting adoptees, that as long as I didn't bring my hand down from over his body, he didn't feel the need to bite.

Gravatar Hi Abita,

Thanks! We are progressing.

When she bites she is coming to me. I'll put my hand in the cage near her, and she'll wander over and sniff, then bite, then sniff, then bite, all over my hand. It usually doesn't hurt, but sometimes she's a little rough. I'm thinking she's just testing me and will stop doing it at some point.

Thoughts?

Gravatar I've heard of "socially troubled" rats that are totally sweet to you outside the cage, but who will bite all the way when you put your hand inside the cage. But what you describe sound like stress bites, in which case I'd guess it'll probably get better when she settles in further.

Darn batteries, we (I, Pancho & Lefty) want pictures!

Gravatar Oops, I forgot to suggest a name for her... My little newphew suggests "Mama", but he calls everything mama at the moment. *LOL*

How about... Ami ("beloved" in Old French; "second" + "beautiful" in Japanese)?

Gravatar Hi Tale,

I'm getting those pictures uploaded tonight. Thankfully, she still moves pretty slowly, so I got a couple that weren't blurry. lol

She's kind of a weird rat about the biting; I've never had one like her before. She bites everything new in her cage all over, and once she's done she doesn't do it much more.

Case in point, tonight we bought her a fancy hammock and she spent about 2 minutes biting every corner, fold, strap, edge, etc. and then settled in and went to sleep.

I think she's trying to figure out what things are, since she's been handled little and had nothing in her aquarium.

I LOVE the name suggestion!! I'm passing it on to J, and let you know. Thanks!

PS- I can't believe your nephew is talking already!
