Gravatar No buck grease problems here yet, so I have no first-hand experiences for your friend.

Gravatar Lucky you! Buck grease sounds like it's no fun at all. Hi to P& L!

Gravatar Yeh...that's that yellow stuff they get in their hair and on their tails, isn't it (I see my boys getting this now they are teens)? Your friend could try to wash it off, but I don't think it will help for a long time. It doesn't hurt them, so maybe she should just let it be..;0)

Gravatar Thanks, Cisca. I don't think she would mind it, except it makes her boys stink.

Gravatar I also washed my boys but eventually the grease comes back. But, now that all my boys are neutered (since they share a cage with females) the grease and the smell is gone.

Gravatar That's good to know, Rattie. I didn't know that neutering them would stop it completely.

I think her main problem is finding something to wash them in that will help with the grease problem, but not bother their skin.

Gravatar I know I am a bit late, but unscented baby wipes are a good way between baths to clean the orange goo of the boys,

Gravatar I like that idea about the unscented baby wipes! Not so stressfull as taking a bath!
About the neutering: yes, that helps too, but is a bit drastic (heheh). Neutering makes their coat feel like they have used hair conditioner..very soft!

Gravatar Hi! My family always takes cares of my ratties when I'm in the Philippines with my Fiance. Last year was the 1st year I had Sugar & Spice and I missed them like crazy for 3 weeks. So I'm sure I'll miss all 3 of them like crazy for 8 weeks!

Gravatar None of my bucks have a grease problem either. Hmmm, sometimes they get a little brown flakey on their backs but that is just buck dandruff and it brushes off pretty easy. ~Jane of the Fluffy Tribe

Gravatar That's a good idea, Steffy. I'll pass it on to her. Thanks!

Gravatar Cisca, I think she may like the idea of silky soft hair on her boys. lol

Gravatar It's great you've got family to take care of the girls, Sarah, because if you didn't I would fly out there and smuggle them home with me.

Gravatar Gee, Jane, you and Theo have it easy! Nice, clean boys. My poor friend must have bucks with overactive glands or something.

Gravatar 2-3 times a week, feed the little ratters olive oil on a piece of wheat bread and your buck grease problem will dissolve (and they'll have shinier, healthier coats). You can also wash them gently with Dawn dish soap (like zoos and rescue organizations use for animals who have been in oil spills) and it will take off the grease.
