Why hello to you too!

Gravatar Snerck! Dang, you're funny

Gravatar "New Frontier" always has a pretty soothing effect on me.

I am glad that the baby is not dead.

Gravatar An IUD? How European of you!

Gravatar You are very brave. I haven't been alone with an infant since my young babysitting days, and even then, they were usually asleep by the time I got there. I was really more of a guard than a babysitter.

Gravatar i babysat for a baby once in my life and that was one time too many.

btw, i commented awhile back that i had a "northern junco" in my front yard. what i actually meant was an oregon junco. the manager at wild bird center in CH told me that they're very rare around here, and that he's never actually seen any in nc. wow! have you seen in your yard? there are two males in my front yard. they're really beautiful--very bright orange under the wings, jet black heads, white bellies. i'm sad that they'll probably be leaving soon, but i hope they come back next winter.

Gravatar Phil: that was just my reaction in real time to a stressful situation.

Jerry: I'll tell you, I was glad he wasn't dead, too. Cause he's a precious little sucker. And the baby daddy was the one who let me know ahead of time about The Nightfly and its soothing characteristics.

JeniQ: I know...very La Di Da, ain't I?

Myküll: Dark-eyed juncos are very sweet, and it fascinates me all the different morphs there are within one species. Looking at your description, are you sure you're not seeing an Eastern Towhee? They are very similar looking but much more likely to be here. If they stay for the summer, you'll know for sure, cause Juncos ain't gonna stick around much longer.

What's with me saying "ain't" twice in this comment? I neve say ain't. I'm getting too folksy for my own good, it seems.

Gravatar Oh, and Pinky? It was *supposed* to have me more in a guard role, but Baby decided that he wasn't gonna go to bed, oh no he wasn't.

Gravatar Once when I was in high school I babysat for a baby. I had no prior babysitting experience, not even with non-babies, and I did not like babies. The mother told me the baby would be asleep when I got there and that he never ever woke up once he was asleep.

The baby woke up. The baby cried. The baby pooped. The baby crawled away from me, screaming, before I could get a new diaper on him. I cried. I pooped. No, scratch that. I called my mom and she gave me advice and I finally got things under control, and maybe the baby even went back to sleep. But I swore I would never ever babysit again and never ever have a baby.

Gravatar I would WAY rather have dealt with poop than that crying. Today I had a much better baby experience. I taught a 2.5 year old how to bring everyone beers from the cooler, at a pool party. Go CAMERON!

Gravatar You are totally right--Eastern Towhees were what I saw. Damn, I wanted to have a rare sighting!

Gravatar Mykull: I once thought I saw a red-cockaded woodpecker, which does live near here but is very, VERY rare and losing habitat, blah blah blah. Of course I didn't know that when I made the call, but...

So then I tell someone who knows more about birds than I do, and she explains that, um, NO WAY. But I persist, cause I am POSITIVE. I call the main bird guy; he meets me. We don't see the bird I saw.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I see the bird again, in a different place. It was very clear to me that it was a white-breasted nuthatch.

Yeah.

So I hear you about wanting it to be a rarity.

Eastern Towhees are wonderful birds, though.

Gravatar Sorry I am incoherent. The "Main bird guy" is a guy who is a huge name around town that knows everything about birds, and I totally dragged him out of bed at 7 a.m. on a wild woodpecker chase.
