This weekend I watched the spy movie "Breach" which gives a lot of screen time to the rosary, Mass, and other pieces of the Catholic church.
In my early years as a recovering Catholic, I had a lot of antipathy for the "meaningless recitative rituals" that make up a lot of church worship. Later, as a recovering person-in-general, I came to realize that rituals have an important place for many people -- not only for what is said, but for the act of saying.
Not that I'm going back to the church any time soon. In my Catholic days, I found it distressing that I could forget the words to the Hail Mary or the Our Father if I had even the slightest bump from my rhythm. Of course, I realize now that part of that was me and my ADD. But part of it was also the church and its unfortunate habit of practicing custom without sufficient emphasis on meaning.
That said, I thought that the movie Breach wasn't particularly nice to the Catholic church. But they're big boys and girls -- they can handle it.

I actually liken the praying to meditation, which I can dig. But for me the process is tainted by the content.
