Gravatar I was glad to see your take on this - I' keeping an eye on him too. (Along with everybody else in N'awlins...) Our levees are still very, very weak.

I remember how bad Houston's last evac was - have they planned to do anything differently in the future? (We do contra-flow, etc.)

Gravatar Hey Laura,

Good to hear from you. I hope you stay high and dry. Houston redesigned the freeways to add contra flow OUTBOUND on the north and west side of the city. So IF you can get through the city it should open up pretty good on the other side.

The radio this afternoon had the Governor's spokesperson on saying that they are already having daily teleconferences starting to plan everything out.

I went to a conference on Hurricane planning this year in Houston and the plans look good. The idea is for everyone in the surge zone to evacuate but everyone else to stay put. During Rita, 3 million people evacuated even though only 1 million live in the surge zone. Of curse after seeing Katrina, the mayor (and everyone else) sorta panicked and told everyone to get out.

We'll know more on Tuesday when Dean gets into the gulf and we can see where he is heading.

Gravatar You guys don't have levees, do you? (I only know downtown Houston - those tunnels are cool - and MD Anderson.)

Gravatar Hi Veritas. I'm very happy to know you are taking precautions. I hope everyone does. Like you say, there's no way of knowing where this thing will hit. One thing is certain... we need to pray it doesn't hit New Orleans. Stay safe, Laura!

Gravatar Laura,

Houston doesn't have Levees. Galveston has the sea wall and Texas City, which is located on Galveston Bay in protected waters has a 5 mile dike. Port Arthur, TX has a levee for protection and it acts like a funnel to push the water up into Orange County (Where Rita hit in 2005).

None of our cities rely on the levees like N.O. needs. I just wish we'd stop diverting money and invest in some really good flood control systems like they have in Europe.

Gravatar Gayle, Hope you aren't getting too wet from the remains of Erin. My son's HS band function was canelled yesterday because they were expecting rain and thunderstorms.
