Gravatar I saw that Michael got Pam Grier and Nazri and I thought, "There's just no way he can lose!!!"

Go Michael!

Gravatar What I noticed is that we don't know who Laura got, and I think it might be Farrah Fawcet. If so, this would provide a really interesting turn of events because the sporty, natural, girl next door thing is as far from Laura's fabulous glamour as you can get. It will really challenge her to get our of her box ... and could be a turning point for Laura on the show.

Gravatar Anybody notice if Michael Kors is back? Someone commented on another thread that Diane Von Furstenburg is a judge - true? MK, DVF and Nina? That would be fabulous for this challenge!

Gravatar Kors will be there he was shown in the previews at the end of the last episode.

Gravatar I think Vincent gets Twiggy.

Gravatar I hope Laura gets Catherine Hepburn and Vincent gets Twiggy - his stuff so far has been very 'mod'.

Where is the other video you mentioned? I found Season 3 Episode 5 Preview. What is the other one called?

Who got Cher? Allison?

Gravatar So in the first episode you come off as really sweet and mellow. But you’re really a vicious b*tch, right?
[Laughs] I’m actually pretty easygoing. There were a lot of sacrifices for me to make to take five and a half weeks off of work to participate in the competition, and we’re not being paid so it’s not for the money. I was trying to size everyone up and be super-nice. Everyone deserves respect until they disrespect me. I’m a reality TV whore. I know how some people work on these shows. Who’s the Wendy Pepper? Who’s the Jay McCarroll? I grew up with five sisters and was very easygoing and calm—you kinda have to be waiting on five girls all the time. I was grateful to be [on the show]. I’m from a lower middle-class family and we had to work for anything I wanted. I was catty and funny and honest, but we all were.

Someone in another post mentioned that PR3 was filmed from May 20 to June 20 which is actually about 5.5 weeks...which is what Kane claims to take off according to that excerpt from an Out.com article...hmmm....just a theory....but I wonder if he is top 3?

Gravatar Wow, that looked like they were fighting over a 2-for-1 blue light special on panty hose at K-Mart.

They had to have done model selection prior to that because I didn't see Javi, and Jeffrey had a different model, where he has picked her each time so far. Also, if Laura stuck with her normal model, she get Cher. Maybe Alison gets Katharine Hepburn.

This will be a FUN challenge! I forsee much snark in the recaps next week.

Gravatar There was a preview at the end of episode #4. Check out the end of this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z...h? v=ZgEFyXnGvcw

Gravatar If you read the "recaps" posted then you would know all the pairings are already listed with Designer/Icon/Model
I'm thrilled for Michael.
I'm terrified about Angela and Bradley.
I'm excited to see what Laura will do.
I think it's a lock between Michael and Jeffrey next week unless Robert is in top form.

Gravatar Really glad to see some diversity in the icons. I know the designers will be familiar with the icons, but the models? My kids are teenagers and neither knew Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Twiggy or Pam Grier. To them Diana Ross is some drag queen guy dressed up like Diana Ross, Madonna is so last century and Pam Grier.....

Course my kids are boys.....

LOVE that it is an individual challenge. I hope we are finished with team things

Gravatar http://www.justjared.com/gossip/...recap/ index.php

Here's a preview for next week's challenge! Each of the models choose a fashion icon for their designers to modernize and this is how everybody matched up (designer / fashion icon / model):

Angela / Audrey Hepburn / Clarissa
Michael / Pam Grier / Nazri
Robert / Jackie O / Danielle
Jeffrey / Madonna / Marilinda
Kayne / Marilyn Monroe / Amanda
Uli / Diana Ross / Lindsay
Vincent / Twiggy / Jia
Alison / Farrah Fawcett / Alexandra
Laura / Cher / Katie
Bradley / Katharine Hepburn / Camilla

Gravatar Hi to the person who wrote about Kayne!!!

I love Kayne!!!

He's like a bird with pretty plummage!!

Gravatar Hmm... I just realized that I'm going to have to come up with an icon for my son to use when HE does the challenge next week for his website. He's ten - I don't think he'd know any of those people. Any suggestions?

Gravatar I'm just trying to get everything in one place here! Thanks everyone.

Gravatar Laura is doing Cher??? Priceless. Did Cher ever have to appear in court? That would be her only moment Laura could capture.

Gravatar So Katia is out?? that's a shame - she was so great in the Miss USA challenge

Gravatar This is just speculation folks - we don't see Laura identifying her icon in the previews. We know that Katie got Cher, but we certainly don't know that Katie sticks with Laura. Right? Careful.... : )

Gravatar Laura wears her hair the way the smart people do.

She scares me

Gravatar I feel bad for Angela. How do you even begin to modernize or change the perfection that is Audrey Hepburn? Its a set-up for failure.

Some things are perfect already and should be left alone. Audrey Hepburn is one of those things.

Gravatar Angela getting Audrey Hepburn seems simply . . . unfitting.

I like this challenge, though.

Gravatar Agreed that Audrey updated is very hard to do - I think the same can be said for Jackie O. Both dressed very simply and for the most part used accessories to show their individuality. I mean think of either Audrey or Jackie and you think of hats, big dark glasses, ballet flats and pearls.

I wonder what kind of hat Vincent will do for Twiggy?

If Laura did get Cher ---- that is going to be interesting. There is a clip in the season preview where Kors asks her if she is a Virgo and she states that she is an architect with a touch of annoyance in her voice. I wonder if that is from next weeks judging?

The high waisted pants that Katherine Hepburn was known for are making a comeback so that could be a possible direction for whomever got her.

Gravatar Is Elizabeth Taylor anywhere in there?

If Malan were still around, I'd hope he could get some kind of silent film icon, like Clara Bow or Louise Brooks. : )

How would Katherine or Bonnie have done on this challenge...made more sporty versions of glamour queens?
Vincent will probably add a hat to whoever he got.

Gravatar I just don't see how Farah Fawcett is a fashion icon. She certainly is a beauty icon, and no one could forget her face. But I don't think she was really remembered for what she wore, unlike the other 9.

Gravatar Audry Hepburn ......in a bubble skirt with rosettes? Please, NO!

Speaking of which, I was in a clothing store the other day and saw a BUBBLE SKIRT! I started laughing out loud. I'm sure all of the shoppers thought i was insane!

Gravatar How perfect that Robert got Jackie O and Kayne got Marilyn!
I'm a little scared about Laura getting Cher though... Sounds more like something for Angela (please, try to get through one challenge without working your granny circles from hell into the design.. seriously, I'm begging here). I wish Laura and Angela could just trade like Allison and Bradley did with the dogs.

Gravatar Oh please, please Angela, don't put "Audrey Hepburn" in a friggin' bubble skirt!! That would be an affront to fashion iconography. I think this would be the perfect opportunity for Jeffrey, Michael, and Robert to finally win an individual challenge, given how perfectly matched they seem to be to their respective icons. I just wonder if Jeffrey's apparent over-zealousness will get the best of him. Does it not occur to him what a waste of energy picking fights with people is, especially when creating a garment under these seemingly impossible time constraints requires a designer's full attention let alone energy. Let off steam after the runway if you must, but until then I would think the focus is on designing the garment. But who knows, maybe Angela does something to really get under Jeffrey's skin. I can't wait to find out.

Gravatar When Charlie's Angels was on TV the Angels were all fashion icons and each represented a different "type". I guess the directors decided to make it easier on everyone by choosing a type that was close to how they were in real life. People tuned into Charlie's Angels just to see what they were wearing. And for that brief year or so Farrah was it.

If Laura does have Cher I'd love to see what she comes up with. That would be the only pairing where the icon's style is completely different from the designer. My bet is that she'll pull it out. She's a professional, after all.

ps. Is anyone else getting tired of Heidi saying "It looks expensive." or "It looks cheap, no?"

Gravatar Estee, how true re: Farrah. the only real thing she was "noted" for in fashion was her hair and that bathing suit in her original poster.

how difficult though for Laura to have Cher since Cher WAS known for fashion in just about all its incarnations of the eras that she passed through. Bob Mackey! how about the outrageous costumes in her videos or the Mackey Oscar outfit?

plus, Cher was so thin right up until menopause....now she's put on a few pounds (looks great) - wonder if that is considered? or is this just a challenge based on "what was" not "what is now" i mean, six of these icons are still here with us and hopefully, still evolving.

pretty serendiptous that Vincent got Twiggy. it occurs to me that the Twiggy of age 16 could have pulled off his doggie look with no prob.,,,and Audrey Hepburn wore a similar one in Funny Face!

and how fabulous is it that Robert got Jackie! again - she could have worn his doggie outfit challenge too!

i love this challenge! it should really give the designers a chance to be very creative!

Gravatar Tom, I was thinking something very similar. Audrey Hepburn and her wardrobe are timeless perfection. There's no need to update anything about her. And while Angela seems like a very cool person, her design aesthetic does not seem appropriate for Audrey Hepburn. Trying to keep an open mind, though...

Gravatar I wish Austin Scarlett were there and got Marie Antoinette. She's a popular fashion icon right now, what with the new Sofia Coppola movie coming out. http://imdb.com/title/tt0422720/
I heard Kirsten Dunst is going to be on the cover of Vogue in a costume from "Marie Antoinette". Will powdered wigs be making a comeback?
http://www.costumersguide.com/MA...om/MA/ vogue.jpg

Gravatar MICHAEL KORS is back! Let's rejoice! Make sure he doesn't leave again, producers! I love his bitchy comments.

How will Kayne do Marilyn? I think he would have liked Cher better.
Will Robert disappoint since Jackie O is his fashion icon? He says he'll need a miracle in the previews.
Will Audrey Hepburn's image be burried under a pile of rossettes? Angela makes rossettes like Masterfoods makes m&m's.

Gravatar with all due respect, i am old enough to have been around for the original Charley's Angels, and i can't recall one single fashion from that show. it was always about Farrah's hair and smile...but then again, i rarely watched it. too insipid in a vast wasteland of insipid 70s TV. didn't watch - horrors! - Dynasty either. did watch Dallas but those were party days for me so i was out more than i was home - unlike today!!!!!!!!

Gravatar I think they probably added Farrah Fawcett because they wanted to have another figure representative of the 70's. Most of the designers are fairly young and would be familiar with her from Charlie's Angels and her popular swimsuit poster. I wish they had added someone else from the 70's like Mary Tyler Moore, Rhoda Morganstern (Mary's sidekick) or Ali McGraw. They all had fabulous clothes!

Anyway, it looks like the judges will be ripping some of the designer's looks to shreds on the runway. Can't wait!

Gravatar I wonder who is leaking all this information about the show. It's ruining the excitement. The production team needs to lock things down next season.

Gravatar So we're losing two models this week. What is happening with them? Javi and Katia are out. And if Uli has Lindsay and Michael has Nazri, there is some sort of selection process.

Gravatar Hi Shar!!!

Wow, I watched Charlie's Angels in reruns and they were so smart and pretty too!!

I think 70s fashions are awesome!!

Vincent would do real well with the 70s fashions. He will make Twiggy look very pretty!!

Gravatar I think the info here is all in the bravo previews, nothing has been leaked.

I too remember the original Charlie's Angels and Farrah's hair did overshadow her clothing. After spending sometime thinking back to what my friends and I thought cool in the mid to late 70's. I'm thinking that Farrah could be credited (or blamed) for bandeau necklines on tops and dresses, tube tops, and perhaps rugby stripes ,and tennis sweaters worn wrapped around the shoulders.

A word about bubble skirts-- They are back. I've been seeing them in one form or another since midway through last winter and the frequency I'm spotting them has increased. They have reached the cute trendy girls living on the upper eastside. While they are not something that I'll be wearing, I am not going to criticize those that do. BTW, I'm sure Audrey Hepburn did wear them in the late 50s early 60's. Vera Wang has several in her recent collections that Audrey would look right at home in. Whether Angela could put one together that would Audrey chic rather than flea market funky is another matter.

Gravatar I have to comment.

Ali McGraw. It doesn't get more 70s iconic than that.

Between her innate style, class and beauty she set the standard for modern fashion in that era.

And Steve McQueen . . . his is an ideal for hotness that very few men can reach, even today.

Gravatar Scarlett, you saw Madge recently. (and we're waiting for your review! You know -- in your spare time...)

What style-period do you think Jeffrey will pick?

(Seems to me that, although she's always working a "look", her early "Desperately seeking Susan" "Celebrate", etc. period was the only time she influenced popular fashion.)

(side-note: Maddie OPENED for a band I was in in 1980. She's rich and famous. We are not... )

Gravatar Literalrose, I am aware of the bubble skirt being hot right now, but I am talking about not making Audrey Hepburn look like a street walker, or all jubilee jumbled. Audrey Hepburn was the epitome of elegant restraint and classic silhouette. I could see her wearing the INC outfit of Angela's, but definitely not in the French art camp head mistress number. Just because bubble skirts are trendy deosn't mean it would be something I could or would want to see on Audry Hepburn. She set trends, not followed them.

Gravatar Yes! Ali McGraw she was truly an icon of that era. Also, I would say Bianca Jagger was a bigger fashion icon than Farrah. .... or Faye Dunaway (the beret she wore in Bonnie and Clyde would have Vincent swooning in ecstasy) .... I can't argue with Cher being included but Farrah?

Gravatar hi, Moonglowdog!

yes, can't wait to see what Vincent will come up with for this challenge!

C - yes, Ali! that would have been a more fashion logical inspiration since she began as a fashion stylist for a photographer and then went on to model. her style was always ... and still is... restrained and muted and classy. i much more associate the word fashion with her rather than Farrah, though of course, Farrah is the more well-known, to this day. all in all, it will be soooooooo interesting to see what the fashion statement will be for an updated Farrah....let's just hope it's not a white nightslip that's been rolled around in paint. i think that was actually Farrah's own last fashion statement.........

Gravatar Yes, I understand that for Audrey the lavender bubble skirt would not be in character, but I think Angela has shown that isn't the only kind of bubble she knows how to make. The ones she has been wearing are not that short. If she did a knee length black one with a simple black boat neck top (one or two black rosettes would be ok) that would be in very much an Audrey Hepburn look. Audrey may be thought of as be classic and restrained now, but she was considered a bit kooky when I was growing up in the 60s. She was known for wearing very structured clothing in odd colors like mustard and odd greens. Think back to Andrae's plant dress from last season - her name came up in the discussion.

I guess I am just a bit amazed that people are so sure of Angela's limitations 4 shows in... especially considering she had nothing to do with the design in the 2nd episode. Yes, looking at her website, her designs do seem very hit or miss but there are enough hits that I'm not writing her off completely.

Gravatar I just can't imagine a scenario in which Katia goes out. Aside from her awesome walk, if you go back and watch the model selection process-- that girl gets picked fast. My guess-- either she just had to leave to show to a prior commitment-- OR...

...they let the models pick the designers. Heidi picks models' names out of her trusty bag, and the two remaining models are either eliminated (by cruel fate!) or just skip this challenge, and we face a three model elimination for the next one.

I think it's not a bad guess, anyway. They're certainly mixing things up with the model selection.

Gravatar oops! first sentence of my last post should read:
Yes, I understand that for Audrey the lavender bubble skirt would not be in character....

BTW, remember Audrey did play a hooker in Breakfast at Tiffany's. THe film glossed over than harsh bit of reality but the book didn't. Supposedly that is why Marlyn Monroe didn't want the part.

Gravatar Re: Ali MacGraw--I'm not surprised she's not on the list. Michael Kors seems to really like her look and his last fall (?) collection was inspired by Love Story and The Great Gatsby. I think she also inspired a previous collection of his. Now that he's back as a judge, it wouldn't be fair to ask someone to tackle Ali!

It will be interesting to which eras the designers pick. When I think of Jackie O in the 70s, I think of the big sunglasses and sort of DVF wrap dresses, but DVF is a judge! Jackie in the 60s and Audrey are so classically simple--it will be tough and interesting to see what they come up with. I agree that Audrey could do a bubble skirt IF it was tastefully done--an update of the LBD? Not sure Angela can go there.

It would be fun to have them keep the icon for 2 challenges and do sportier one time and dressier for the other.

Gravatar This will be the biggest test for Laura. She cannot design for herself this time. Cher (Uli would have done well with her, but Diana Ross is ok too - she gets a free ride.)

Moderizing people who dressed so timelessly (Audrey Hepburn & Jackie O) will be big challenges too.

Michael also has it easy -- Pam Grier is the perfect identity for his "modernizing" blend of sheer fabrics and sexiness.

Jeffrey's pairing with Madonna seems like a cakewalk at first glance, until one thinks about it a little bit -- the situation is fraught with pitfalls , -- the Judges could tag his whole aesthetic as "retro backwards" -- and after all Madonna has been dressing much more conservatively and sleeker lately. It's a tough challenge for him.

Gravatar I think Katherine Hepburn would have been perfect for Laura. I agree about Farrah Fawcett. I love the feathered hair look, but I think they should have chose someone else, like maybe Debbie Harry. Im sooo excited about Madonna being one of the icons.

Gravatar I had to laugh out loud when I saw the preview footage. Angela leaps up and down when she sees that her model got Audrey.

"I about peed my pants!" She declares. Since she was wearing those very attractive "peed look" cargo pants at the time I thought:
That girl is utterly without irony. Or a rear view mirror.

Gravatar Instead of Farrah, I've got a REAL icon they missed.

DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES!!!!

Gravatar Re: Kayne taking off- Don't they all have to be gone from their regular lives for the entire filming? Otherwise, it would be obvious who was in or auf'd and in what order.

I also thought Diana was a big oversight but maybe a wound that has not healed yet.

Gravatar I agree I don't see the fashion iconess (is that even a word?) of Farrah Fawcett. Or Diana for that matter. They should've gone with Carolyn Bessette... maybe even Diana Vreeland. But that's just my opinion

Gravatar I think Siouxsie Sioux would have been a strong substitute for Farrah Fawcett. She practically invented the goth look, though that style is totally wrong for the show.

Gravatar Maybe they should have said "cultural icon" instead of "fashion icon" - all of those ladies would fit that label better.

Gravatar Is it likely that all the designers will be familiar with the styles of their icons?

Will they be limited to modernizing the look shown in the pic?

Gravatar Joan brings up a good point. I wonder if the auf'ed designers go back home, or if they are held in seclusion somewhere else while taping ends? Does anybody know the answer to this?

Gravatar I thought it was fun to see how excited Tim seemed at this turn of events. I'm sure the designers picked their models and the models picked the icons, at least from the preview.
This should be a fun episode to watch.
I applaud the producers for coming up with this challenge on such short notice.

Gravatar OKAY. ON ANGELA.

Hi. Can everyone clue in to the fact that Angela, despite what you think about her design aesthetic, is actually fashion forward.

Those "peed in her pants" everyone is talking about. Yeah, they're Rogans. Really expensive, "fashion forward."

Those bubble skirts? As has been mentioned previously in posts, they are totally around and here to stay in a modified form for awhile.

And the rosettes? THEY MADE IT INTO THE NEW YORK TIMES. Wait for "old world techinques" to start making a comeback.

Her first episode outfit with the leather skirt + her bubble skirt in the 3rd episode + her Macy's outfit DOES NOT MEAN SHE MAKES A BUBBLE SKIRT FOR EVERY CHALLENGE. Just because she wears them in real life doesn't mean that she ONLY DESIGNS BUBBLE SKIRTS.

I wonder if she knocks it out of the park on this Audrey Hepburn dress if people will start giving her her just due and respect? I think she is being severly underestimated right now. I think people are looking at her personality as opposed to her actual designs. If Vera Wang liked the construction and draping of her episode 3 outfit (that's a serious compliment for someone who everyone on this board says 'can't sew"), and Mehmet picked her design with M and L to win in episode 4 ... there is totally something there. And is she does well with Audrey and shows more range ... wow! She'll really be someone to watch. The girl has a range that I don't think people are acknowledging. I love Uli and Laura's clothes, but there all basically the SAME thing.

As the New York Times said, she went from the contestant least likely to succeed to the one with national distribution. Like it or not, she's getting major press. Regardless of how she continues on the show, people are already going to remember her name more than they will Bonnie or Katherine. She has the spark. She's different.

Gravatar One possibility (out of many) is that the designers are assigned icons by the producers based upon their strengths and weaknesses. Or else they are pulled out of Tim's velvet bag. But some of those designer/icon pairups seem too good to be coincidental. Michael and Pam Grier? Heavenly. Laura and Cher? Let's see if we can get her out of her comfort zone.

I predict that this week is when we're going to really start to see Michael move to the forefront. It was about this time last year that Daniel V. started coming out of the shadows...

I get the feeling that the models choose the icon and don't know what designer is attached to it. Otherwise the two that get auf'd would do so merely for not being as quick to the table, and that doesn't seem fair, it doesn't seem like something PR would do.

And Michael Kors is back! Our long national nightmare is over!

Gravatar How about approaching it by what each Icon was known to have brought to our fashion idiom? Katherine Hepburn really legitimized pants for women; Cher made the bare midriff acceptable for other than beachwear; Marilyn accentuated the curves (I thought Michael's episode three dress was very Marilyn); Jackie brought Chanel to the masses; Twiggy evokes mod and the mini; Audrey Hepburn brought the super slim profile to sportswear (remember when capri pants were called pedal pushers); Diana Ross was the epitome of Theatrical Glam; and was anyone taller and fiercer than Pam Grier (plaform boots and an automatic). I think Jeffrey's grunge look is pefect for an early Madonna, but Uli will have a harder time nailing Farrah's universal Calfornia girl. That's my take. Wednesday should be real interesting.

Gravatar Siouxsie Sioux would have been a really fantastic choice, aesthetically, but I think of her more of as a fashion forebearer than an icon. The true goth icon, IMO, has not yet quite emerged...

Gravatar With all due respect, yes, bubble skirts are classic. Balenciaga has some out right now that reference the 60's but what Angela put out on the runway for the dog challenge was not a classic bubble skirt silhouette. It was cut clear up to the top of the model's thigh and super tight at the top and throughout the hip and reminded me of something a tween would get at Forever 21.
Just because it has a "poufing" action does not make it a timeless bubble couture skirt.
I agree with the judges when they said they question her taste level.
She seems very "art school" and crafty and not in the good way but in the hokey "more is more", cutesy way. She doesn't seem to have a point of view or vision beyond wanting things "cute". There is a difference.
As for someone mentioning above that Kayne has Marilyn and wondering how he will approach this. I think he is a natural for her style as her clothes were complete works of construction and made to showcase and hide other aspects- much like a pageant garment!
I think Amanda will be perfect as a redhead Monroe.
Michael will rock this challenge, no doubt.
As for Jeffrey doing Madonna, I took this challenge fromt he preview to think they are modernising from the era of the actual photograph so therefore, he would be updating her "Lucky Star/Borderline" mid-80's style. He can't modernise her as she is now- she is modern now- that would be silly.
Farrah's look at her heyday was hot rollered featherback hair, cowl turtlenecks with high-waisted silm pants and boots...also she rocked alot of disco-type spaghetti strapped dresses and jumpsuits made of lurex-y/ spandex with strappy high sandals- this photo shows exactly what I mean and I can see Alison being quite comfortable with taking this to the here & now:
http://www.hissandpop.com/celebr...fawcett- 015.jpg
I think they did a good choice of picking a range of iconic looks- for people who are grousing that Carolyn Bessette and Diana weren't selected, I think Jackie O fills that niche already...both Bessette and Diana dressed simply and classically in basic color pallettes.
Siousxie Soux, while I love her, would have been pure costume.
I think Angela has hard work ahead of her, knowing her predilection for "doo-dads" and "cute" and knowing that Audrey was the muse of Givenchy and most of the time, she is wearing his looks so in essence, does Angela have what it takes to update Givenchy??! Me thinks not.
I like Laura but I am nervous for her. As people have mentioned, she is very much associated with Mackie who is the orignator of flash & dash- come to think of it, Angela should switch with Laura.
Although she may be okay if she is updating one of early early Cher's column dresses she wore on her tv show.
I can't wait til the show though...I love challenges like this.
I feel both Michael & Jeffrey will excel as well as Kayne & Alison.

Gravatar ps-
Twistygirl, we know how they got paired from the preview for the episode on the Bravo site. The models got to pick for their designer.
Bill, Alison is doing Farrah not Uli.

Gravatar http://www.hissandpop.com/celebr...lebr...fawcett- 015.jpg

I LOVE those jumpsuits with the little strap in the back. I see those every where whenever I watch a movie 1978-80. I love 70's fashion period, esp. late 70's fashion. But im wondering what period of Diana Ross were talking about here. Like the mo-town 60's period, or the glamourous disco 70's period?

Gravatar This will be such a fun episode!

About the Hepburns -
Audrey Hepburn, I know I'm in the (extreme) minority by not liking her, but it will be interesting to see what Angela does with her style.
And Katharine Hepburn, I wish they chose another thirties actress, like Garbo, Crawford or Dietrich; it could've been a little more fun.

Whoever said they wish Louise Brooks or Clara Bow was included, I agree! Or even Gloria Swanson or Theda Bara... seems like more of a challenge than modernizing someone like Madonna.

Gravatar This challenge may seem to be deceptively simple and fun challenge on the surface it may prove to be one of the hardest to pull off on many levels. First of all, 4 of the icons have passed on to their rewards and we usually don't like to mess with the image we have of the dearly departed. Judges are humans and have their biases, both good and bad. We are almost unanimous in our opinion of Audrey, Kate and Jackie O, all of which receive "good" vibes. As long as the designer stays within the accepted classic lines, he/she will most certainly receive good marks. To pit these icons with "personalities" such as Farrah, Pam, Madonna, Twiggy, Cher which have received "mixed" reception may prove to be the undoing of the designer/model. While the individual judge may appreciate the designer's attempt to color outside the lines with Audrey, Kate or Jackie O, or even Marilyn, there may be a subliminal resistance. Farrah is just too "fuzzy" an image to conjour up much less modernize. Twiggy looks pretty fabulous in 2006. I am at a loss to imagine Diana unless you go with our own "Laura"'s sleek style. I am really looking forward to this episode to see how not only the designers handled this assignment but how the judges view it without bias.

Gravatar You know what seems really hard to me is who really knows what some of these people would dress like today? Like Farrah Fawcett and Diana Ross. It seems to me that they just dressed in the style of thier times, they didn't really stand out. Wouldn't they pretty much dress like everyone else today, then?

Gravatar P.J.-good point. I couldn't figure out what was bothering me until you put your finger on it. Although fashionable, some of these "icons" were not really fashion forward. Their personalities or P.R. agents brought them to the forefront.

Gravatar With all due respect, I think that one should keep in mind that the challenge Angela created the super short lavender bubble was one in which she was instructed to design for a *woman who DRESSES HER DOG*. I think it is worth considering that Angela may have pushed the look to the extreme thinking that a woman who dresses her dog is an extreme individual. While it is true that the skirt that Angela did for the doggie challenge and what Nicolas Ghesquière recently did at Balenciaga are not exactly the same silhouette they are both bubble skirts. Unlike, some of the other contestants this season, she doesn't seem to be merely copying classic silhouettes that have been done to death. She seems to be playing around with volume, shape and yes, decoration. It looks like she is having fun rather than making everything so deadly serious. Which I think puts her in good stead to do Audrey. As for updating the classics of the 50s and 60s from the house of Givenchy, not even Hubert de Givenchy was successful at doing so. The reviews toward the end of his career were not kind. Which is why it may be wiser for Angela to stay away from the haute couture Audrey and concentrate on the Audrey that wore more offbeat clothing. Whatever Angela designs, I'm sure she'll put her heart and soul into it.

Gravatar Angela sort of reminds me of Kara Janx last season....although Kara was always flustered about what to do and Angela seems to know where she wants to go....but Kara seemed to always be in the bottom as has Angela (except this week). I think we're going to see a different Angela emerge now and be pleasantly surprised, as we all were in the end with Kara!

I'm not writing Angela off by any means!

Gravatar I think you bring up some very good points Charlotte. The challenge is to update the look not recreate it. Which the more I think about the more difficult it seems. The little glimpse of Robert struggling with Jackie after he was so happy to get here under scores the problem.

I also wonder if they are locked into the timeframe of the photograph. It is a bit strange to think of updating the look of a woman like Madonna who is quite adept at updating it herself.

Gravatar I hate to admit this but after I saw the matchups, I couldn't sleep, I had to get up and try to sketch a modern Marilyn. I failed miserably, "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" kept playing over and over in my mind and I couldnt concentrate. I decided to move on to Audrey and I couldn't get that anklet and Gary Cooper out of my pea brain! And don't even get me started on Jackie O! (Actually, Robert could probably use his Chanel outfit for the doggie challenge, do ya think the judges would let it slide??).

Gravatar If Laura actually has Cher, maybe it's not such a bad pairing. The first time I saw Laura in one of her cut-to-the-navel numbers, my first thought was that the only woman I'd ever seen look good in one of those was Cher!

Gravatar HA! i love this challenge.

Vincent for Twiggy -- spot on! Just his style.

funny, in the first challenge i thought Robert's dress was TOTALLY Audrey Hepburn. (god i want that dress BAD.) would like to have seen what he would really do for Ms. H, for real.

BUT!! -- Jackie O?! PRICELESS! i cannot WAIT to see what he brings to this.

Kayne for MM oughta be smashing too

the models really know their designers, eh?

Gravatar On the preview, Laura's model got Cher cause it was the last one left! And it looks like Allison's model wasnt too quick on the draw either....

Gravatar You know, Katharine Hepburn is an interesting choice...

Will they do the very young Katharine who wore dresses or the later Katharine who swore against dresses and only wore manly looking pants ?

I say go with the pants.

Gravatar In the preview we see Michael, Angela, Uli, Robert, Kayne all presumably happy with their models' choices, where were the others...Not so happy with their icons? Then again in the promo Michael, Robert and even Angela are subdued during the judging..,Or is it creative editing?

Gravatar "I hate to admit this but after I saw the matchups, I couldn't sleep, I had to get up and try to sketch a modern Marilyn. I did the same thing! I always design my own outfits to go along with the challenges. With this, I kept on designing things that I've already seen these women wear.

Gravatar Can't wait until Wednesday!

I, unlike other seventeen year old boys, know who most of these icons are.

*was hoping Vincent got Jackie O because he is crazy about hats, and he would laugh himself to death with her*

Gravatar Awwwww.... Milton - you rock!

Gravatar orchide, my bad. Due to my hideously slow dial-up at home, I have a hard time with the Bravo site on the weekends, I have to wait until I get to work to utilize my wireless connection. I couldn't tell if the models were choosing the designer or the icon based on the TV preview. It still seems a bit arbitrary to me to do it that way.

My prediction - I don't see how the Michael/Pam Grier/Nazri combination could possibly lose. It's so perfect. My gut reaction is that Bradley will be auf'd, especially since he had such a hard time with the pants Bonnie designed, and Katherine Hepburn was all about pants.

I think this is going to be one of the best challenges ever.

Gravatar No worries Miz Twistygirl
And I second your thoughts on Michael having this in the bag!

Gravatar I dunno...

Pam Grier + Michael + Nazri seems to good to be true...

Makes me worry.

But hopefully this is just reality TV paranoia, and all turns out more than fabulous.

Gravatar Katherine Hepburn wore dresses periodically throughout her career (particularly for films as it was often required for a part), but she ALWAYS chafed at it, and strongly preferred to wear pants. And we all owe her a lot for having an influence on the popularity of pants for women. Of course, she wore them better than any woman has since her.

I am dying to know who gets Katherine Hepburn and if they mess it up, I will hate them. I won't be able to help myself.

OH! and someone said Something about Audrey Hepburn playing a prostitute in Breakfast at Tiffany's - and she doesn't. That may have been the case in the book, but they altered it for the film. It's a fine line, but they took pains to strongly imply that she had no physical relationship with the men who took her out. Therefore the whole asking for cash to take to the ladies room and popping out on them routine. She was a kept woman, absolutely, and a dreadful little con artist in a way but NOT a woman of "negotiable affection". Audrey would never have agreed to the latter.

... and since when is Farrah a FASHION icon? Hair, yes. Clothes? notsomuch.

Gravatar The main thing I remember about the clothes on Charlie's Angels is that they were frequently wet. When I think hard I am picturing Farrah in a blue denim pantsuit with a little white scarf.

I think Uli already modernized Diana Ross with her outfit for the dog challenge. The print and the halter top on the dress seem very much like what she wore. This might actually be a tough challenge for Uli if she wants to show some range.

Gravatar *wondering how much the selection of "icons" had to do with which respective "icon" would grant PR license to use their image for a commercial purpose*

Gravatar I think Kayne will do well with Marilyn Monroe. When I think of Marilyn one of the connections I get is the "Rat Pack in Las Vegas" era. Kayne does well with "Vegas-y" type outfits. His work in the third challenge epitomized this style. (And, yes, I know I'm borrowing the term "Vegas-y" from Tim Gunn).

Gravatar Hi Everyone!!!

I don't know if I'm right, but I think people in here are saying Uli sews a dress for Farah!!!

Uli makes pretty dresses for people who like to go to the beach and walk on the sand!!!

Farah's so pretty with big fluffy hair!!!

Gravatar several thoughts, one, Farrah Fawcett (if you are taking her character on charlies angels) was the "sporty" one... She was known for years , after she dumped her first hubby to take up with that papermoon guy, to wear famous designers, but she really was always known more for her hair, than the clothes she wore...that one could be really tough, or really great, since there arent a bunch of preconcieved notions...

I hate to speculate on who would win or lose on this challenge, simply because there is so many ways this thing can go wonky on a designer.... I think this challenge is going to be a good one, and I will go ahead for giggles and make my picks (which are based on nothing more than what I want to happen).... Michael wins, Bradley (who seems tired of doing this stuff) goes home...

Gravatar This week's episode is going to be so much fun. I can hardly wait!

Everyone's talking about how difficult it's going to be to design for people who are timeless like Jackie, Marilyn or Audrey. The ones that I think are actually going to be more challenging are the chameleons of rock. Cher and Madonna. Madonna alone has worn absolutely everything. Her latest look from "Confessions on the Dance Floor" is a very form fitting pink spandex thing. I see Jeffrey more in tune with the Madonna beginning look than the Madonna-to-be look. Cause seriously, you never know which direction she's going to go. Could be French courtier gowns, a Jean-Paul Gaultier cone boustier, something shredded, something asian influenced... Jeffrey, in my mind has his work cut out for him. What could Madonna wear that she hasn't worn already? Seriously?

And Cher?! Another textbook case of chameleon fashion.

Gravatar RoastDuck.....I couldn't agree with you more on the late Princess Diana as a fashion icon that should have been on that list. I'm sorry but unless hair is considered iconic, why is Farrah in there? UGH!

I have an idea I'd like to see as a challenge so listen up Bravo TV. I want to see the designers design for the real world. I'm sorry but Angela's outfit for Macy's just doesn't cut it. The average size of an American women is a 14. Not all of us are 5'10 nor are we a size 2. For the challenge have the designers create an outfit in which an average American woman could buy off the rack and it be functional/fashionable/flattering. Then bring in women from off the streets to model. That goes more for the crediblity of fashion than redesigning/making over a fashion icon.

Gravatar yah i agree with the Farrah comments - she was a pop culture icon but fashion? Naaaaahhhh

am also leaning towards Bradley being the one who goes soon, he's a sweet thing but he seems in over his head - this challenge might be more than he can keep up with

and may i also say - Michael Michael MICHAEL!!!

i think he is gonna pop right out of the shadows on this one.

Gravatar Hi SangriaSD!!!

I agree with everything you just wrote!!!

Many people think average people are not pretty and don't look pretty in the fashion dresses

But it's good to look at the average people in pretty clothes!!!

Gravatar forgot to add that while Uli's dresses are certainly pretty, and she DID hit it right on with the doggie challenge (that strappy back was gorgeous, especially the fabric and pattern choice)- but I really think that was just luck. my take on it is that she has only one style, and just like a broken clock is still 'right' twice a day, so it is that her one-note style will be the right 'fit' for something or other, at some point -- but I don't think she has shown any versatility or creativity in actively 'desiging' something unique for each challenge. I'ts more like her 'one' style will eventually be the right one for something, somewhere.... can't say i see her in the final group though.

Gravatar I believe this is anyone's challenge to win. Even though we have had four challenges, only one was really an unfettered opportunity (challenge three) for each designer to show his/her perspective. From where I sit everyone did well (Although Bradley and Vincent were kinda weak). I wouldn't be surprised at anyone hitting a homerun.

Gravatar I wonder exactly what the judges will be considering in terms of "updating". Will they be looking for the same sort of silhouette but with a modern twist, or a total transformation. Will the models have input in the judging, like season 1's wedding dress challenge? Vincent could be the sleeper here. He just might surprise everyone with a knockout look, that is if he can resist making a crazy-looking hat.

Gravatar VB, I am no lawyer, but I don't believe there is a licensing issue in terms of choosing the icons for this challenge. After all, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Kate Hepburn, and Jackie O. ar all deceased. Any legal experts out there care to chime in on this?

Gravatar Michael has this in the bag. A modern chic take on Pam Grier is basically his design aesthetic: elegant urban. I really hope he wins.

There could some odd fits (Uli and Diana Ross, Laura and Cher if she ends up with the same model) but I think they have the chops to pull if off.

A modern Audrey Hepburn for me would be Audrey Tatou as Amelie. And Angela could take that look to scary, dark places. I see rosettes up the ying-yang. Perhaps some gift ribbons.

My pick to go home: Bradley. Just because.

Gravatar So Amanda (Kayne's model for Ep.5) posted this comment on Kayne's myspace:
--------------------------------------
8/2/2006 11:19 PM

Kayne! *Sigh of relief* I am FINALLY with you on the show! Can't wait for next week.. best freakin item of clothing I have worn in my life!

Gravatar funC: I am a lawyer, although I don't practice copyright law. It doesn't matter if they're alive or dead; outside of "fair use" (i.e., a non-commercial, non-profit, educational use -- which this is most decidedly not), all of these sorts of images are licensed by some copyright holder (which may not necessarily be the subject of the image). I am fairly certain that whomever holds the copyright for each of these "icons" had to grant permission before PR could use them on the show.

Just look at Elvis. You don't think someone's still making bank off of his mug? You can't even sing "Happy Birthday" on television without paying someone off. I think it would be interesting to know the identity of "icons" who declined to appear.

Gravatar I think Farrah started this kind of end of disco sort of Daisy Duke thing, sort of a natural/athletic look, she was the one on the show who got out of the tailored suits the most and into those thin warmup suits with the stripes on the sides and the jeans and flannel shirt thing.

She was a fairly good print-type model, so she didn't really keep the same patterns of dress in articles as much as candids.

I really had to think to remember it though. I was very young. I just remember a lot of blond women like her and Candace Bergen and Cheryl Tiegs and Christie Brinkley.

If it weren't for Jacyln Smith and Lynda carter, I probably would have felt fairly ugly. I need to scan my childhood Wonder Woman Halowwen costume for my icon.

Gravatar "Anybody notice if Michael Kors is back? Someone commented on another thread that Diane Von Furstenburg is a judge - true? MK, DVF and Nina? That would be fabulous for this challenge!"

Hi Laura,

Yes, it is true. We can't wait.
Diane Von Fürstenberg is truly a fashion icon (best known for her wrap dress). Calvin Klein called her the quintessential modern woman.
We LOVE her. It's always a pleasure to see her on the show.

Gravatar The preview for Episode 5 (the one at the end of Episode 4) shows Michael on the runway with Nazri in a reddish garment...meaning he's either in the bottom or top three. Remember that the only designers who appear with their models on the runway are the best and the worst.

Gravatar Everyone thinks Michael has it in the bag. That scares me. In Bravo-land, if they telegraph that someone has it made, they are auf'd. Please let it not happen this time!!!

Gravatar ROFL, Laura, Jeffrey "quacking"....I like that.

From the preview, there is a comment about someone's outfit looking 'cheap' - and if you look next to Bradley, you see metallic fabric, and he has Katharine Hepburn... :* And of course, Angela has immunity. If you look at the preview, her outfit has some weird stitching on the sleeves....it also looks pretty cheap.

Remember, they have to Remake the fashion icon. So Madonna won't have a bustier - although she is so chameleon I have no idea how they could remake her with something that she hasn't been already!!! (Queen Elizabeth?!) And Farrah shouldn't have wings - I agree she isn't a "fashion" icon at all, just a hair icon. If they wanted a 70s fashion icon, they should have picked Diane Keaton as Annie Hall.....(Ali MacGraw is a good one, too, Legs.)

Gravatar p.s. Scar - my Gravatar isn't moving, so I guess Gravatar doesn't do moving icons!!! Oh well, we tried!

Gravatar Does Angela have immunity? That was never onced mentioned during the episode nor in Tim's Take.

Gravatar Immunity was not discussed. I think since it was made into such a big deal in previous eps - she doesn't have it.

For the record, H&M has yo-yo (rosette) vests. I took a pic yesterday and put it on my blog. They sold out really quickly.

Also, those puffy sleeved taffeta-esque disasters that Chloe made for her runway show are pretty much everywhere (see the most recent Lucky magazine) as are cowl necks (take that ninagarcia).

And this is offf topic - but someone over at television without pity posted a link to a designer's webpage on which he showed a convertible tank/dress/shirt just like the one Keith designed. Kind of suspicious, if you ask me.

In real life, Angela's outfit is hideous (perhaps also due to how Inc translated it; though I disliked it heartily when it was shown on the runway). I'm very tempted to try it on just to see how it looks on a decidedly NOT 5'8" size two shape. But, I don't know if I could drink enough to not have nightmares for years from the experience.

Gravatar p.s.
There was an article in today's NYT travel section reporting that Daniel V has been asked to design uniforms for a New York Hotel chain. It also noted, with great irony, that Micael Kors (who offered Daniel a job, which he declined) has been designing uniforms for W hotel. They asked Daniel if he knew that, and he said no and apparently changed the topic quickly.

Gravatar I don't think so many people would dislike Angela's Macy's outfit if it was designed by Keith.

Gravatar It just occured to me that I wont be able to see the new episode wed. night because I will be at the beach! Hopefully I will be able to catch on Thursday.

Gravatar Is it confirmed that Bradley has Katherine Hepburn? I didn't see that in the preview. I did not think we knew who gets her... I'll be honest, I was hoping for Laura.

Gravatar Up thread, I know someone posted the presumed matchups, but according to the previews, I could only confirm the following:
Michael - Nazri (Pam Grier)
Kayne - Amanda (Marilyn)
Uli - Lindsay (Diana Ross)
Angela - Clarissa (Audrey)
Vincent - Gia (Twiggy)
Robert - Danielle (Jackie O)
Jeffrey - Marlinda (Madonna)

As far as I can tell, we haven't seen which models Laura, Bradley and Allison picked. The three models left are: Katie (Cher), Alexandra (Farrah) and Camillia (Miss Kate). Is that accurate?

Oh! Also, we know in the last model mix-up, Laura picked Katie, Allison picked Alexandra and Bradley picked Lindsay. Obviously this didn't stay the same because Uli is now paired with Lindsay.

Gravatar Shrinkydinkkitten, the link on your post needs fixin'. (you used @ in there).

Yeah, everybody go see the H&M can't-keep-'em-in-stock yo-yo-rosette-vest pix on her site!

Gravatar Thanks pdogshreds! I didn't think Laura, Bradley or Allison were shown yet.

Gravatar "And this is offf topic - but someone over at television without pity posted a link to a designer's webpage on which he showed a convertible tank/dress/shirt just like the one Keith designed. Kind of suspicious, if you ask me."

Shrinkykitten,

Can you point me to this link. I just spent 30 minutes on TWoP and can't find it.

Thx

Gravatar Hi Marisa,

While we don't have firm proof of the pairing up of those last 3 designers and 3 models... if you look at the preview from last week's episode (go to you tube, it's Project Runway 03 Episode 04 part 5)..it does appear that Bradley is standing on the runway next to a very tall model with long black hair. My guess is that he is paired with Katie and must update Cher. It would also explain the funky metallic material standing next to him as well. p.

Gravatar SangriaSD-

I agree totally with what you said about Angela's design for Macy's and the challenge you'd love to see PR do (especially seeing as I am that "average size" woman). That was one of my biggest problems with many of Sanitno's designs last season- especially the first challenge and the Nicky Hilton dress- they simply wouldnt look good on any woman who was bigger than a size 0. But the sad fact is that 99% of designers design clothing for the Runway and not the real world. Even those designers who "design for curvy women" think a curvy woman is a size 6.

Gravatar SangriaSD-

I agree totally with what you sai
