Gravatar For those of us on the west coast where the show hasn't aired as yet, is there anyone left to party?

Gravatar HI all,

I liked this episode...I do not think there was a lifestyle coach...or did I miss it?

CAT

Gravatar I can tell from the plethora of comments that this episode really engendered a great deal of controversy .

I wasn't all that moved, either. I think they did achieve the goal of making Stephanie look her age and more professional, but perhaps they overachieved that goal. Had I seen her only in the after makeup, I'd've put her age at no less than 35. I like that she lightened it up in the Postcard section - she looked a bit younger and brighter.

And while I do agree that she needed a more professional style for work, once again the style didn't really take into account her quirky and whimsical side, all of which was evident (perhaps too evident) in her former wardrobe.

As I mentioned earlier, while I'm sure the parents love the new, more professional look, I wonder how her young patients reacted? I know when I was small, adults that were dressed all serious and looked all grown up were very intimidating. I thought her Care Bear socks would be a perfect ice breaker - something that kids can relate to. Sometimes there are more important things than fashion or looking one's absolute best - and putting others at ease trumps that in my opinion.

Which brings me around to what I think is a fundamental problem with this show. It's right there in the title: Tim Gunn's Guide To Style. It's really all about HIS specific idea of style, not about style in general, and that's a pretty narrow definition as presented in the show. I think we can only watch the same essentials and format and results so many times before we all fall asleep.

I did like her new haircut, and I did think a lot of the "after" wardrobe was professional and stylish, but I do hope she's still got some fun clothes stashed away somewhere!

Marcia.
(who is wearing a Powerpuff Girls tshirt because she spent the day moving boxes, cleaning, and lifting lawn mowers, and a day dress and heels just don't quite work for those activities.)

Gravatar OK, I have the show on.

1. When the MO opened the door to let T & V in, the look on V's face said, "Can I be anywhere, but here?"
2. I find the expression "bitch slap", which Tim used, to be offensive to women...it's just my thing, though Tim did use the expression in a manner that did not intend offense.
3. Clearly the MO is fashion challenged, which is why she was selected, but I thought T&V were particularly harsh with their editorial comments. They sounded like they resented and were affronted by the MO's fashion challenge.
4. If all I had ever seen of Tim Gunn was this particular episode...I never would have come to love him as I do. In fact the Macy's commercial he's in with Martha Stewart and her daughter just aired and the difference between that Tim and the one on this episode...well there's no comparison.
4. I cannot handle V's hair this week.
5. The first 30 minutes of this show has elapsed and I haven't seen anything about this episode I like...sigh.
6. I was too hasty. Tim selected great glasses for the MO.
7. I probably need to get sleep because I'm cranky, but Tim needs a haircut.
8. Cynthia Rowley's dresses were great.
9. The hair and make-up produced the most profound change of any of the MOs.
10. The reveal was one of the best, but I am having trouble with Tim's gushing his affection for the MO when in the first half of the show he seemed to treat her like she needed to be exterminated, not made over.
11. The tickets to the Jerry Lewis Telethon was a classy gift.
12. I felt Stephanie deserved more support from T&V. They probably gave it to her, but again, the editing probably was awful.

Gravatar CAT, you didn't miss the life style coach. There wasn't one, but they could have used Benny Ninja again. It's not clear what Nina Garcia added.

Marcia, you are so right about the narrowness of the show. xxoo

Gravatar I thought the bitch slap comment was hysterical. It seemed like Tim and V were finally relaxing a bit. It's slang for goodness sake, it's how real people talk...not all dreaded politicially correct. I still adore the show, but V needs to dump the scarves (is she growing her hair out? I hope so). I agree with Marcia about how Care Bear socks could offer a nice ice breaker for her patients. Stephanie just needs to find the happy medium about when and where to be the kid versus the grown up. But watching the show makes me want to change and improve and make goals....and go shopping. And maybe a lot of women love that, but shopping for clothes has never been my friend. The show is making me focus differently. I ordered Tim's book too--I'm looking forward to reading it.

Gravatar My reaction-I forgot it was on. Ouch. I guess that sums it up.

Gravatar ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Gravatar Sorry I missed last night, but it doesn't seem like I missed much! Wow...seems like it was so boring it didn't even inspire a little snark!

J

Gravatar I missed the first 15 minutes (and I'm glad I missed that, from the sounds of it), and I caught the rest in pieces. and perhaps one piece that I missed (so mea culpa in advance) is -- why in effing hellzapoppin is it considered good for anyone to attend an ex's wedding with the goal of looking fabulous enough to make the ex regretful? That's just so self-denigrating, it makes my blood boil.

harumph.

Gravatar We missed you last night JeAnne! Your episode still stands out as the best so far.

Gravatar High point - no life coach!

Low point - V talking about how Stephanie was a disaster while V herself looked even worse.

I totally agree that they made her look too serious for work. If she was a dermatologist or an anesthesiologist or other medical practitioner than pediatrician, I would say her look was good if a little old for her years. But I thought she looked potentially intimidating for children when wearing her suited ensemble.

I loved her dress for the wedding but I agree with Agnes about attending the wedding of an ex. I just don't see the reason to put yourself through that even if you are fully made over. It's just so much classier, in my opinion, to decline and send a gift.

I liked her red day dress. It was just perfect for her figure. I also thought the tickets to the Jerry Lewis thing was a nice touch. I was not fond of the Tacori necklace. I also wasn't fond of the eyeglass thing. In my opinion, that is something better done with the optician in a good eyewear boutique. Yes, the right eyeglasses can change/upgrade your look quickly but it would have been nice to have gone though the process with her rather than a hurried gift closet situation.

Gravatar Hmm. I guess I'll catch it later this weekend, rather than wake up for the rerun in a few hours.

Oh, Tim... this could be such a great show. It's really a make it work situation!

Gravatar If this were the first episode I'd seen, it would also be the last. The tallent was so very nervous with so much giggling; she wasn't getting a calm reasoned appraisal of what her style could be. Her nervous laughter coupled with Veronica's clothes totally dominated the show.

The last two episodes have left me wondering at the 'fit' done to the designer dresses.
The gray dress was altered to fit at the waist, but there were still folds just inside the front armholes, probably and inch and a half of excess fabric and at least they were symmetric.
This episode's designer dress just didn't fit her. It poufed out where dresses don't pouf.
My guess is that they're choosing a dress that fits her breasts and then doing a retro fitting, trying unsuccessfully to take in the rest.
Maybe they should be finding designers who design clothes for women with breasts.

Gravatar I agree with Ann--that designer dress was my least favorite of the ones she tried on. The lowcut one looked great on her, but she was uncomfortable in it. She should have gone with the first one--the dark blue. I didn't get Nina Garcia being there either, like...oh, surprise...Nina just happens to be shopping here today.

Gravatar The weird thing is that the life coach bit is in the photos section of the Bravo GTS website. From the pics, it looks like they were teaching her how to behave on a date. Wonder why they left it out. As for Nina being there, I suppose it's good publicity for her book, but they could have made it more clear why she was there - like Barb said, it was like "oh, I just happened to be passing by."

Gravatar I agree with Ann that the designer dress the MO selected didn't fit properly on top, and what made it worse was Tim's gushing about how great she looked. It seems to me that the production of this show was squeezed in between a myriad of other things Tim and Bravo were doing and these later episodes smack of "Let's just get this done." There's no quality, taste or style in the production.

Note to JeAnne:

The succeeding episodes have not lived up to yours, both in terms of your spirit, how you related to Tim (I think you have been the only candidate with whom Tim had any chemistry) and your own contribution to making the show work. You were engaged. The other candidates were led.

Gravatar Awwwwww thanks Roz!!!

I needed to hear that because I have been feeling a little mixed lately since the airing (coupled with work/stress drama which I'm sure just heightens my emotional state). There are a lot of things I gave the benefit of the doubt or just let it roll off my back. On one hand I got tons of positive feedback from it..and not just from friends. I got emails from women with their own issues who felt uplifted by watching the episode and I love that truly as that was exactly what the altruistic part of me wanted to achieve.

On the other hand, there was a lot of snark that I had to let roll off my back...comments about my fat arms, thin hair, obvious weight loss surgery, tooth gap and so on and so on. I let it go and then I read the assistant blog and the whole "i dont get why a skinny man would be with a fat chick" and though I understand the spirit and style in which it was written...I couldn't help but feel cheap after spending a week with this guy. In other words, he should have known better. Then again, Matt hasn't been all roses and sweetness with the other MOs so I let it pass.

The icing on the cake was listening to Tim's podcast and just feeling super bummed that 1)in the entire process he never knew what my motivation was for losing weight

Gravatar oops looks like I said too much!

continued...

1)he never figured out what my motivation was for losing weight

Gravatar grr argh...i've just lost this twice now.

Gravatar JeAnne,
First, I think you work on Wall Street and I can identify with those job stresses. I'm in the same business and am moving back to NYC from LA in a few weeks for a Wall Street job (which these days is in Midtown). You have my support on that score. I was appalled at Matt's blog post after your episode, though I don't think he was trying to be mean spirited, he just could have expressed it differently. I am broken-hearted that you were subjected to the snarky comments and I am afraid to find out from whence they came. I have an IPOD, but am not techologically-oreinted enough to download Tim's pod cast. But, trust me, now I will figure it out. This show has been more revealing about Tim than anyone. I think he has major issues of his own and the camera doesn't lie; he's projecting them. JeAnne, the BPR family has embraced you. WE all think you are great. You've been the only MO to particpate with us, as far as I can tell, and I am sure I am safe in saying all the rest of us are thrilled that you do. You have so much, including what seems like a wonderful husband, so loving and supportive; he's your audience. These other clowns aren't; don't empower them. I have a feeling when Tim slows down for two minutes and does as he exhorts the rest of us to do, which is to take a critical look at this show and the comments from the fans who love him, he may want to slit his wrists. I think that Bravo and Tim, in an effort to "get the show out" rushed, overreached and failed to edit or control the editing...on all fronts, not just what happened on camera, in a manner that bespeaks quality, taste and style. JeAnne, you have been the Camelot of this show, the "one bright and shining moment," and don't let anything else interfere with that thought! xxoo

Gravatar I agree with Roz about JeAnne. Every word.

Gravatar I'll try one more time and then I'll give up...

The icing on the cake was listening to Tim's podcast and just feeling super bummed that:
* in the entire process he never knew what my motivation was for losing weight (?!)
*listening to the podcast he clearly has plus sized issues which thank goodness I didn't feel during the week of taping
*he thought and stated that I had a fat acceptance agenda when coming on the show and he was worried that I wouldn't be up for the challenge.

That last one is just too much. I have zero agenda apart from my inexhaustable belief that everyone should feel good about themselves no matter what age, size, shape, color, sex etc. I am all about different strokes for different folks. Furthermore the only line in the sand for me was EUD....everything else I was completely open to which anyone watching the show can see plain as day and is the reason I think that the ep was a stronger one. It's misdirection at best and complete fabrication for drama's sake at worse and it makes me feel a little cheap. I have never let size determine or define my life, but obviously everyone else there (ironically enough except for Veronica!) chooses to do it for me.

I promise the pity party is over as it was positive for me no matter what they chose to add that wasn't real.

Thanks Roz for your sweet words and I hope that your iminent move means potential future shopping buddy for me XOXO

and thank you TBone...I'm so happy I stumbled onto this blog!

Gravatar testing the gravatar :D

Gravatar Don't see a gravatar, JeAnne, but I do see some fabulous posts. You are a gem of a human being!

Gravatar Je Anne,
I have now listened to Tim's podcast regarding your make-over. I may want to put a contract out on him, which given my future proximity to him could be accomplished. I'll go shopping with you any time!! Shopping, drinking...partying...whatever! You go, Girl!

Gravatar Replace Veronica with JeAnne.

Gravatar Laura K,
Brilliant idea!!!!

Gravatar JeAnne,
If you let the sniveling little twits get you down, you've stopped being the wonderful, mentally strong woman you've revealed yourself to be on your postings here.
(And I don't think the twits of the world have a chance against you. )
There's lots of stupid out there. Don't let it touch you. There's lots of superficial floating around as well.
What's important? You. Your husband. Your friends. How you treat others.
After that, it's all little stuff.
signed,
Ann, a fan of yours

Gravatar Seriously people- I'm tired of the Tim bashing on this site of late. I liked the blog about how to improve the show- but other then that it has been a free for all. Give the show a chance to grow. Tim Gunn is still the charming teacher that we all know and love.

Gravatar I know I'm coming back to beat a dead horse, but I've been doing my level best to focus on what is wrong with the show - the focus, the chemistry, the process, and that editing - and not descend into ad hominem attacks. But the bottom line is that the Tim Gunn being portrayed in this show (and apparently its extra content on the website*) is not the same persona as we have seen in PR and other appearances. I don't know the reason why, but I feel it does need to be noted - and can be without saying "you horrible person you".

(* I say apparently because I have not had the time to check them out myself due to some unexpected family issues, so I'm reacting to the comments about them here.)

Marcia.
