Nice post, Vegas Guy. Your principle did the right thing, and your points on ganstas is important, although you'll have to share how well that went down.

Great that you've not heard it since...let us know if it seeps back in.
Kids want guidelines and boundaries and someone to tell them the truth.
GREAT story...I hope they did learn something. !!

I think many of them did learn something. I certainly learned a few things. My biggest hope was that they really thought about what the teachers said and what I said because only they can change their culture and their neighborhoods. That's why I like this school so much because it gives many kids the opportunity to get a good education and break the cycle of violence and broken families.

People forget the past when they use such words.

Nice job by you and the whole teaching team over there. Maybe the lesson can be reinforced somehow... can a Dishonor Role be instituted, where names get posted of jerks who continue to call each other "nigger," etc.? And then a "Bring In Your Ugliest CD Day", where pupils get jazzed about the weekly session of teacher playing and mocking the foul attitudes & language on the CD that a student has brought in. (Different student gets the honor each week.) Meanwhile the disc in question gets passed around the class for each student to mark up or damage in his own way, and at the end of the pass-around the kids have the fun of checking out the grievously destroyed CD. Constructive Destruction, I call it.

You're wise to take a break from school for a year or two. Too much schooling is bad for the soul--just ask our students!

I hope the teaching goes well. We also have a problem with the N-bomb (as the administration put it). Keep fighting the good fight. You will win them over. Good Luck.

CTG, It's as much for my family as it is for me. It's hard on my kids for me to be gone two and three nights a week, and it's even harder on my wife.
TX Truth, it's gotten better, now if I could just stop them from using 'boy' I'd really be thrilled.
