I like your choices, but I'd also encourage you to put up something of the opposite political spectrum. Give the kids two viewpoints to wrestle with.

I especially love the Che idea. A student of mine (great student) read "Motorcyle Diaries" and was convinced that Che was a hero, so I had him read a biography about what Che did afterward and the kid said, "Man, he was worse than Fidel Castro. He wanted to turn the whole Western Hemisphere into a Communist, totalitarian regime and murder whoever got in the way."

It was a cool moment for me.

Very cool. I think given both sides students make up their mind very quickly and recognize those with bankrupt philosophies. I let the students read Howard Zinn, an avowed leftist wack, and they very quickly see that he is full of it. His book is devoid of scholarship and long on his opinion. He is a WWII veteran so he has my respect for that. Students are smarter sometimes than we give them credit for nowadays. Good luck and welcome to the profession.

I gave my husband the same Che poster you have - he lived in South America during the time that Che was running around murdering anyone who disagreed with him and has some really strong memories of that time. It drives him nuts that kids think he's some kind of hero.
