I can't wait. And we're doing Haiku poems tomorrow so it should be interesting to see what they come up with.

Good uplifting, educational reading there. I slummed a little this week: A Deadly Game (an in-depth analysis of the Laci Peterson murder case). Always feel vaguely unclean after reading true crime. Was the western a good one?

Zack, it was more of a mystery than a western but it was a very good book. The biography of Ike was very fascinating to read. He did much more as president than he's given credit for.
Dr. D., I hope you have a good semester.

Do not forget that we have that meeting next Monday!
I have to go pick up my transcripts from CSN to take over to the NSC registrar's office, too. Do not forget to get that done as well!
The break was very well needed, and I feel deserved. I cannot believe we survived the semester, even though I normally take four classes a semester. This is the first time since 2005 I have held a full-time job, though, while going to school full-time.
It is all over and done with come May!

Z the book was excellent, but you need to read it more than once, because it's that deep.

I'm doing a ton of poetry right now in our social studies unit. The era is sort-of Vietnam / Counter-culture / Civil Rights, so there is some great stuff about social change, alienation, etc.
I began it on Friday with a few preview poems and the kids totally jumped all over it. I'm always shocked when I hear teachers say that kids aren't into poetry. It makes me wonder what the teachers are using.

John Spencer: If they're using e. e. cummings I don't wonder that kids are turned off. I'm sure there's some great stuff by him but must admit I tried some recently and found it a bit on the opaque side. Now Dylan Thomas, there's a modern (well, sort of) poet I can sink my teeth into. Hey you teachers of poetry, anyone familiar with the super-fine poem about the Titanic by Thomas Hardy? Read it recently and it blew me away despite not being able to recall the title at the moment.

I picked poems that I found interesting. I would never make my students study "Ode to a Grecian Urn" because I hate that poem with a passion.
My goal is to introduce them to poetry, not make them hate it the way liberals hate George Bush.

If you feel like it Vegas I'd love to know what your problem is with "Urn." I actually find that one to be most excellent! (Could just be a taste issue; sort of like tastes in food, it defies analysis. But if you have a case you'd care to air about the poem's shortcomings I'd be fascinated.)
