"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt 1907
I love that quote

It is umbelievable that you are bying into the propaganda. I went to a protest in Philadelphia and there were a lot of inmigrants of many countries carrying american flags. What is the problem that because you come here you have to forget your culture? Have the italians done that? Have the cubans done that? It is unfair to hold other people to higher standards.
Hello newcaster Diaz-Balart (CUBAN) is agains HR 4437. I can believe that you people are forgetting were you came from. If you want people to asimilate why do you have CAlle 8 in Miami. Lo que es igual no es ventaja. Y yo si puedo hablar porque yo soy puertorriqueña Ciudadana americana por nacimiento.
Marisol, I'm not buying into anything, I'm just posting pictures: nice and bad pictures. I can have my opinon, just like Diaz-Balart can have his.
HR4437 is long dead, and is not even the issue anymore at these protests: their issue now is illegal immigrants DEMANDING, instead of requesting. The government is buying into the propaganda afraid of taking decisions because they may loose votes. And no one is giving a FUCK about securing the borders and persecuting the Employers who hire the illegals. THAT SHOULD BE THE FIRST PRIORITY.
As for the assimilation issue, Miami has Calle Ocho and the Mexicans have Mexican Independence in September, Cinco de Mayo and El Grito de Juarez as well as independences celebrations of Central, South America and the Caribbean around various states. I don't see where the disadvantage is. Those are ETHNIC specific events which Calle 8 is not so your argument is not valid.
Calle Ocho while organized by Cubans (actually by the Kiwanis of Little Havana), but is not an event Celebrating being Cuban. Its a Musical Block Party for all, it is a week long event that starts with a Latin Jazz Festival and ends with Carnaval Calle 8 - a blend of all Hispanic caribbean cultures.
As far as us "Cubans" NO ONE is forgetting where they came from, we are HONORING where we are now, and the nation that took us in and gave us freedom and a home. We are now Americans, and my house flies the American flag and none other.
Additionally, by stating "you people" you are assuming we are all of Cuban descent here, which is far from the truth as many Americans by birth (not Hispanic,) also visit and post on the site, such as Bob, the one who posted before you.

Marisol---
What is it you don't understand about the woird "illegal". It might even be in a Spanish dictionary.
The first thing about the word "illegal" is that it means you have no right to be here.
If you can't come here "legally" go back to whereever it is that you come from.

Dear Ben: Are you a native american? Navajo, Cherokee etc? Because if not then acording to history you don't have a right to be here either? The people that came to america on the May Flower did not have documents or authorization to be here and take away the land of the indians. So unless you are a native american then you are a decendant of an "illegal" immigrant.

Marisol--
You are full of communist propaganda. If for no other reason try these.
I am a twenty five year U.S. military veteran.
I have paid taxes in the United states for over fifty years.
I have never collected welfare or food stamps.
I legally vote in elections both local and national.
Now go out and march with Answer and the other communists.

Dear Ben: I have also paid my taxes. I have family currently serving in Irak. My father in law is a Korean War veteran. So I am proud to be american. If being fair is being a communist to you well I am. I do not belong or support ANSWER. I support the hispanic immigrant that work honestly to have the american dream.

Ben,
First off, thanks for visiting. I hope you like the site, and please feel free to give me feedback.
I have to admit I don't know how you reached the conclusion of Marisol "is full of communist propaganda".
Given the nature of this site, I would appreciate no insulting or throwing of accusations such as "communist". We can all debate without resorting to name calling, and trust me I would NEVER allow a communist view to ever be posted here.
