I read that quote from the Amoss differently than you did. I also think he's a racist, but he shares the blame with the rest of the MSM. That is, "If [it]...had harbored ...white people...[there] would not have been a fertile ground for this kind of rumor-mongering" refers to reporters thinking the worst of poor blacks.
