How do you defend freedom of speach against someone who doesn't believe in freedom of speach? And doesn't have it? Difficult, but at least one thing you shouldn't do: Say that you are sorry for those cartoons. At the beginning they weren't very good, but now, after this fuzz, they are getting better each day.

This situation shows just how far Christianity and Judaism have evolved next to Islam. Christianity has adapted to current Western standards of freedom, meaning it too can be targeted when some adherents choose to misbehave. The fact that Islam has not yet adapted to being “just another institution” in the West does not in any way suggest that Christians are the victims of unfair treatment. Rather, it shows that Islam needs to evolve if it hopes to become a mainstream religion in societies that place high value on individualism and personal freedoms. Many of the same Christians complaining that their non-existent right not to be offended isn't being upheld are they same ones who will sneer at how primitive Islam is for rioting at the slightest media criticism. You can't have it both ways.

Europeans say they have a right to freedom of speech and even to "blaspheme" and Muslims, traditionally conservative, must be understandingly tolerant.
I embrace the belief that in an open society, nobody is above the law and nothing is exempt from critique. "If you would be a real seeker after truth, you must at least once in your life doubt, as far as possible, all things," says the great thinker Rene Descartes.
I can't embrace the belief that in an open society, you are allowed to doubt things selectively and hypocritically.
Challenging taboos is admirable since it serves the human race, but please do it respectfully. And without grudge.
