Lawhawk,
I think you and others may be exagerating the impact. This is not teapot dome or watergate. There is plenty of Democratic scandal out there that can be cited.

"That Democrats would wait til the last possible moment to unleash this information is politics as usual."
Uh, it was the Repubs who covered this up. How can you possibly blame it on the Democrats?
Wait, let me guess: It's Bill Clinton's fault. He lowered the country's moral standards.

Now we lynch people figuratively, we politically lynch them. With or without proof, just as back then. We get into a mob mentality and decide who should be lynched and we go right out and start lynching them.
Take a deep breath or ten of them and ask ourselves about the timing of all this. Elections. Enough said? Foley is out, and good riddance, the rest has to wait until the FBI is finished with the investigation. I do not expect the left side of the aisle to wait until the proof is in, by then elections will be over. What does fair mean around election time? Nothing. But the Right side of the aisle should have the common sense and basic decency to wait until the the cards are dealt before deciding whether to fold them or play them.

Guess it takes the electorate's mind off the on-going disaster that is Iraq. Surely someone has to carry the can for that catastrophe. "Can we have a word, George?" But you would assume Mark's escapades and the fact that no one in the know blow the whistle would lose the Republicans more votes that Iraq. After all, it's hard for Iraq to get worse (optimistic assumption), so opinions on that issue are pretty much set in stone. Imagine Brother Karl's burning the midnight oil, although if the mid-term results are way out of sync with the exit polls, won't someone smell a rat (no pun intended)? And electors protesting election results has become all the rage. Nice neutral Buddhist country, anyone?
