Lawhawk,
I'm a TNR subscriber and have been for most of the last 27 years. I also get The National Review. While the Glass scandal damaged the magazine, it doesn't prove whether TNR is right or wrong here. It's irrelevant.
One quote from the Glass affair that I do feel worth noting is what Adam Pennenberg wrote.
"It's tough proving a negative. It is even tougher proving that something or someone does not exist."
That's the obstacle bloggers and others questioning Thomas writing face. What was written smells, but can't say positively it didn't happen. Not without getting more info, info TNR may only posess and is likely not to divulge.
BTW Pennenberg is the person who uncovered Glass in 1998.
As a TNR subscriber, I hope the magazine hasn't been hoodwinked again. But the doubts and questions being raised right now, make me feel TNR has goofed again. TNR's wishy washy replies, defensiveness,(Read what Franklin Foer said to WPO's Howard Kurtz today) and belated investigation show at the very least shortcomings at the magazine in addition to adding to the doubts present at this time.
I linked into today. Foer got one of awards, is TNR screwed up they'll get another Knucklehead. The magazine has gotten three to date, that puts them in pretty elite company. Pres. Bush, The New York Times, The Palm Beach Post, Florida's Dept of Children and Families to name a few.
Cheers,
Bill
