As to whether he said it - Obama had a town hall style Q&A after the speech. The WaPo had this:
"Obama said he suspects that one of the reasons his grandfather seldom spoke of his wartime experience was the trauma he had witnessed.
"In World War Two we didn't have the concept of post traumatic stress syndrome. People had to basically handle it on their own," he said. Referring to an uncle who had been one of the first U.S. troops into Auschwitz, the concentration camp, Obama said: "The story in the family is he came home and just went up in the attic." "

"osama" obama comment: The Warren Report says that George W. Bush and his father were involved in the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy.
MSM response: We demand that Congress take immediate action to investigate the involvement of President GWH Bush and GW Bush in the assassination of a sitting US President and a candidate for that office.

His words were "one of the first U.S. troops into Auschwitz"..
How does that imply that his uncle liberated Auschwitz?
I think some reporter made a false association.. we should all take a deep breath and look at the exact words.
First US troops in to a place DOES NOT mean liberators.

These "errors" are not news worthy. The end result is his great uncle (many people refer to their great-uncle as simply "uncle") helped liberate Buchenwald. Are people gonna whine about -that-?

People are going to complain about his geographical illiteracy. They're going to question how someone can talk about his family the way he has - throwing his grandmother under the proverbial bus (and this uncle is actually his grandmother's brother).
No one is criticizing his grand uncle for his service - I'm criticizing Obama for his nonsensical comments time and time again, and the media's ongoing refusal to consider this pattern as anything but troubling.
They instead make excuses that he's tired, or misspoke, or otherwise find reasons not to provide equal coverage as compared to when Clinton or McCain make errors.
