Gravatar False. The people who don't want him executed are people who believe that killing him serves no productive purpose other than stilling some people's bloodlust and making it all the harder to sort out the lead-up to the war AND bring the mess to a reasonable conclusion. The only "purpose" it serves right now is Bush being able to gloat and brag -as if he didn't get enough Iraqis 6' under already.

As for lawhawk, that's a funny name for someone who appears to believe that a constitutional system of justice serves the same purpose as a lynch mob: "Meting out" "justice" as if killing one person would bring another back to life or as if killing Saddam would somehow make even the thousands he killed. It speaks of both a weird attitude towards human life, the value of which just seems to be what fits the argument du jour, and that of a constitutionally laid down justice system, which serves to protect just as much the accused as the society.

Whether "Lawhawk" disagrees with the impression of the Times is immaterial, given that the latter -not lawhawks- is mirrored internationally. But then again, Lawhawk seems to think that the US legal system is the only one worth considering on this planet -not realizing that in taking this approach, a trial in Iraq is nonsense to begin with.

Maybe a little less bloodlust and a little more global perspective would serve this blog well. Lawhawk claims to have loved Peter Jackson's LotR. I think it was an abomination. But it served one purpose really well: To illustrate the pick and choose mentality of moral principles many people sell as "values" today. I remember sitting in a movie theatre in Texas when the scene with Gandalf was shown where he said ""eserves death! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give that to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends." No reaction in the theatre at all. None. Not a single one seemed to grasp the meaning of what was said. But I bet they all went to church next sunday, hearing a nice sermon about "He who is without sin..." grasping the meaning of one just as little as the other.

But hey, I am talking to someone who believes that the laws of nature don't apply to Iraq and that when the president says so, the planet turns flat. The entire statement on Iraq on the about page is one of utter gullibility, scientific illiteracy and willingness to believe just everything one is being told without ever once verifying it independently.

Go ahead. Make a marthyr out of Saddam. Make a marthyr out of him and show that every single dime spent on history books was completely and utterly wasted. Make a marthyr out of him and show that the only "plan" you can provide is killing people, and when it doesn't work, kill more people, and when that doesn't work, kill yet even more people.

And wonder why you never sort

Gravatar ... sort out that mess.
