That is about the strangest apointment he could make. How is the former head of OMB a good DCI? If the dems made Bush pull his pick for SC Justice because she had no experience, the Republicans should fight this apointment tooth and nail. This is no time for on the job training in national security.

And you're absolutely right - Panetta doesn't have time to get on the job training. He's got to deal with the mess from day one, and there is no steeper learning curve. It's not a position for a political hack, especially one who has sought to cut the intel budget before - back during the Clinton years.
The Clinton administration was an intel disaster. They allowed Bin Laden to create Al Queda, allowed Al Queda to attack America and American interests time and and time again, and did nothing about it -- except wag the dog when he got caught stroking the cat. Heck, when Osama's head was offered to us on a silver platter Clinton turned it down. So why are we appointing Clinton's political yes man with no experience to run the CIA? Why is this a good choice for the country? Even the libs are and the LLL are finding it hard to swallow (watching CNN before and they were stumbling on supporting this pick.)
