Gravatar The only thing I don't understand, honestly, is that it was apparent to me from Identity Crisis #1 -- the only one I bought -- that the story was a bunch of nonsense, badly done and not at all worth the hype. Why is it that only after seven issues is everyone waking up to what was bleedingly obvious right from the get-go?

Not singling you out at all, Brian, just a convenient place to ask -- and thanks for sharing your thoughts one one of the most awful, wrongheaded releases of the year.

Gravatar Oh please, Alan, that's easy.

Because of blind optomism that the caretakers of our most beloved myths will do right by them.

Stupid, I know, because we've been kicked in the balls again and again, but that's what it is. Hope.

Gravatar You summed the whole mess up perfectly: "where's the heroism?" I've been trying to explain to people since this "event" started why I wasn't reading it and wanted nothing to do with it. I could have saved myself a lot of time and effort with just that one simple question. Thanks for an excellent review and getting right to the essence of what was wrong with it.

Gravatar Agreed - great review. To be honest, I kept buying it for two reasons. First, I expected it to turn out better - anything hyped this big, blah, blah, blah. Second, from the first issue forward, I couldn't keep my eyes off the train wreck happening live in front of me. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this from Marvel (not to overly slight them, mind you) but rape, murdering unborn children, "oops, I goofed, lucky I brought this flamethrower?" WTF?

Gravatar There's a lot of things I want to say here. Two things now.
1.There is NO WAY this is the WORST COMIC OF THE YEAR. I mean, have you read half of Marvel's output this year? Warlock? Starjammers? All the incomprehensible X-Books, like Excalibur, which even my most die hard X-Men fans at my store have bailed on? Even if you didn't dig the way the story turned out, at least it was actually readable.
2.Where's the heroism you ask? How fucking cynical and nonchalant, especially coming from someone who endlessly gushes about his new child and family. The heroism is in the heroes being PEOPLE. All of them understanding that, as a result of their decision to do the right thing, less noble people may try to hurt them, but they fight on in spite of it. Lois Lane still loves Clark Kent. Bruce Wayne continues his fight because of his love for family. That is what this story, in part, was about, and that is that they are PEOPLE. And sometimes they're flawed, but they work hard.

Gravatar Warlock is not bad... It's quite good... At least it's "different"...
Witches... THAT was VERY bad!! (probably built to steal some readers of Witching, the Vertigo comic)
Identity Disc.... THAT was quite bad (probably built to steal some IC readers) (but I liked the ending... Because it was like the ending of a movie I like very much)
But at least all these comics didn't have so much hype... No one thought that Witches/Warlock/??? were the "Comic of the Year" and that they would have changed everything.

Gravatar I could've handled IDENTITY CRISIS in any year but one in which ASTONISHING X-MEN came out. I'm just so sick of seeing the characters taken apart and reduced to cynical gibberish. I'm also tired of death being the big event whenever there's a big event series.

If anything, ASTONISHING X-MEN is proving that it's much more powerful to build the characters back into icons and to bring some of them back from their stupid deaths. IDENTITY CRISIS felt like a snuff film to me. A very well-written/drawn snuff film at times, but a snuff film nonetheless. Yeesh.

Gravatar

Wow, did you get it in the "per pound" method you've described in the past?

Gravatar above: referring to the 20 box collection you bought

sorry

Gravatar Yes, Luke, I am your fa... er, I meant, yes, we buy comics by-the-pound. 50 cents a pound,at that.

Given how long it took to unbag them and sort through them, I may have over paid

Doing 1 box is easy... 20 is very very hard.

Gravatar Also I wanted to add something a friend pointed out today. The "heroism" you keep looking for, maybe the point is that the characters featured, especially in the DCU, choose to be human. They ARE gods, and could rule Earth. Superman still CHOOSES to be Clark Kent in spite of these dangers, and there is definitely something heroic in that.
I'll agree, the flamethrower seems really....odd and unexplained. But I think overall the story was very interesting and well done, and people are just lashing out because it is "cool" to do so.

Gravatar My favorite thing about IC #7? Well, there's a certain character who informs us that the plot of this piece of crap "makes perfect sense." The name of the character: Mr. Miracle.

I didn't think it was particularly well-scripted, either.

Gravatar I read the first issue and no further (OK, I peeped at my freind's #2, but did not read it cover to cover). I don't want to see overt images of rape, or read about a brutally murdered woman's slain unborn child etc, in the DCU or in the MU for that matter. I thought that it all seemed cynical and nasty, rather than "gritty." The rape scene was CREEPY for all the wrong reasons (voyeuristic; prurient; exploitative). It's the most appaling scene I can recall reading in a mainstream comic book.

Did this series carry a "Mature Readers" label? Because it f*cking well should have, not that this would matter much, given how DC hyped the book as an event. That rapist Dr. Light is set to appear in TEEN TITANS, which has its own all ages sib book. I'd like to think that no impressionable lads would jump from TITANS GO to TT to IC trades. I shudder to think about this crap being on library shelves across the country. I love DC, but this was, IMO, a real misfire and misjudgement.
