Gravatar I saw Shelley Winters once in person. She was dining all by herself, with enough food on the table for 6 people. The waiter said it was the saddest thing, that she was always alone, ordered vast amounts of food, and finished it. This was about 25 years ago, and she was still a beautiful woman, but very very sad.

Gravatar Oh Meg's comment makes me feel all the sadder now.

Thanks for commenting on my Flickr site about this. I feel weird about being sad over a famous person's death if I've never actually known the person. It is a testament though to their ability to make others feel or see or think through their craft and acheivements.

Gravatar I'm sure Shelley's in heaven bossing everybody around

Gravatar I saw Shelley a couple of years ago at a diner having breakfast. She was holding court with a group of friends, and seemed to be enjoying themselves. I learned later, that she often had breakfast at this restaurant, and was always in the company of friends.

Dean Martin was someone who often ate alone. Though I thought this was a sad fact, friends said that he actually enjoyed eating alone and preferred it. When friends would see him in the restaurant, they might say hello, but knew better than to ask him to join their table.

Different people enjoy time alone differently. Regardless, Shelley was a great start and will be missed.
