Gravatar There's a hoax going around that he went forward at an altar call 2.5 weeks before he died. Some idiot putting the hoax together happened to mention the church in question, which of course allows someone to check. The pastor, apparently, has denied any such thing. But I think some people have received the email and just want to do some fact-checking, so I wouldn't assume any one motivation behind this.

I'm not sure why you suggest that people might be praying for him. Roman Catholics might do that, but Protestants generally consider death the end of second chances. The only people who might pray for the dead would be those who believe in retroactive prayer (i.e. prayers that God might have answered out of having predicted that the prayer would later be prayed).
