He was trying to say that we are sophisticated, cosmopolitan, beer swilling, NASCAR watching rednecks. The press probably just abbreviated his quote.

I think he may be trying to go for the angle that this isn't something kids are going to buy to get drunk. It's much more cost-effective to buy Natty Ice.
