I live in Oklahoma and know what you are saying. I don't like the excuse that it is cheaper to eat calorie rich foods. I have seen plenty of satellite dishes on roofs of people with almost no money who still find the money to buy fast(see junk) food. I think that it is being looked at backwards... being poor doesn't make you obese. Rather, lacking self-discipline will make you poor and obese. Just my two cents.

The Times article is spot on regarding infrastructure. I'm a Canadian hardcore cyclist - or at least I was until I arrived in Birmingham for a few years back at school.
The narrow road width and lack of sidewalks in the suburbs really, really discourage cycling or other ways of running errands other than taking your car.
Plus, a long pattern of suburban development specifically designed to discourage through traffic, and or cul-de-sac infill developments really limit your choices as to destinations.
Husband and I are currently evaluating moving to one of the older city core neighbourhoods, just so we _can_ engage in those activities.
