I like your last paragraph, and if Paul Keating did say that, it was the most sensible thing I have ever read him to say (maybe after "get a job").
I am a union member, and I believe we need to reinvent ourselves. My father, a farmer, used to say it was easy to deal with the unions because you could just have one deal, instead of negotiating many.
We need to make the union something that employers would want to have work for them. That doesn't mean selling out workers. Just reliable, professional service, without letting our members be taken advantage of.
The unions would be a lot of better off ridding themselves of their allegiance with the Labor party, but I can't see that happening.

Many say the ALP would be better off ridding itself of the unions.
And they also add that they can't see this happening.
This is, if electoral funding is seriously reformed, unions will find it too hard to donate to the ALP, and this may reduce the close association.

I agree with your post Leon.
One point I would make about unions not getting special favours. I agree, as long as the government of the day isn't giving special favours to business to attack workers (like removing the right to challenge unfair dismissal).
Dodgy business people get to hide behind a company if they fuck up, workers have little or no support or protection without a union.

That's certainly the case with larger employers.
However, to complicate matters, small businesses are often not the more powerful party. My mother was amanager of a medium size business and an employee took the company to the AIRC alleging a breach of an award. Because the employee had the union representing her, and the company chose to represent itself, it was the underdog in the matter.
Truth be told however, the employer still won. This partly had to do with the fact that I volunteered my efforts in giving advice, and partly also because the union underestimated the employer, probably because they didn't know abt the legal mind that was on the case!

Is your legal mind so preoccupied with law that it can't deal with vowels, Ln?

You left a few vowels in there Scott. Rather sloppy work.
Your attempts to impress me are however very cute.
I'll give you a 'B' for effort.
