I'm so sorry Leo. I'm catching up on my blog reading from the Holidays and saw this. I'm with you, I've put down cats, dogs, and horses and each and every one of them broke my heart.
I once had a horse that was a killer. Literally sent me to the hospital a number of times for trying to bite through my arm. But I loved that jerk and was there looking into his big brown eyes as he was "put to sleep" (my decision). As his heart stopped, I saw his eyes widen and him panic and pull back. The poor vet fell down right in front of him, right where my horse should have collapsed. But instead he somehow threw himself to the side and avoided crushing the vet. I laid on his neck for hours in the cold remembering and crying and can't imagine ever hurting that badly again. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.
