We had those "flowers" growing up in Illinois. Through we would pick the individual flowers off and chew on the white end because they were sweet.

I just read in The Handbook of Nature Study that the author considers a weed to only be a plant that grows where you don't want it. Can't convince dh to "want" weeds, so we've been pulling and pulling them up. I identified teasel in our backyard. It was getting close to 3 feet tall (blush), but it was in a cozy shady corner so escaped my notice. I read that bees like it and teasel honey is very good. Interesting what can be in your yard...I wonder when we'll start seeing thistles?
