Gravatar I agree it's unusual that we Aussies get a special presentation following a Keynote. But I'm not convinced this is gonna be an iTunes announcement.

Why? Well Steve likes to be at these events, and it's a long flight from the US to Australia in his Gulfstream. The event is being held only 6 hours after the Keynote. Not that this was the case with the last lot of store openings... Canada was a non-event in this respect.

And why would Apple announce an Australian iTunes store at the same time as they'll have other big product announcements? That's diluting the marketing message.

And iTunes store openings usually involve special invitations to a "special musical event". This is just being marketed as a Macworld event.

And wouldn't New Zealand be involved too. That is, One Store to rule both our Lands?

Maybe this is just the local Apple management getting proactive about the one big Apple event in the year. I'd like to think that we'll hear a release date for Tiger

Gravatar Continued...

Tiger is big news. And if the rumours about a flash based iPod, updated eMacs, an updated Keynote, and abundant/faster/cooler G5 chips in a new range of PowerMacs are correct then there'd surely be enough info for a big media event in dear old Martin Place.

Just my $0.02

Gravatar i think in addition to reaffirming the marketing message for the aus-nz apple base, there would be something specific with steve or some other major apple dude/dudette popping up on the video link

Gravatar Think about how Apple markets in Australia - it doesn't compare to the US and EEC. We are very much a backwater here for Cupertino, and there is no way Jobs would come here since Apple is late to the party Australian legal downloads. Nope, better to do it at SFO MacWorld, together with our Kiwi friends (perhaps Japan too?) and make it a Pacific-basin event.

I can't see the point in Apple HQ Sydney making a big deal about the Keynote several hours after the international press has been all over it, unless there is something specifically relevant for Australia. iTMS is the only Apple branded development that comes to mind.

Unless - there are advance units of the new iPod for the media to play with at Martin Place. Now that would bring the media in for a few hours, and the mandatory refreshments.

Gravatar I wonder if a 'headless' G4 Mac would be sufficient reason for the event?

Gravatar At least you guys have an Apple in Australia. In NZ, we have to put up with an Authorised Distributor.

Gravatar I don't see a headless Mac requiring a special media event. It would be rather ho-hum, although Macheads might think it's news. No, the media is all over the iPod/digital music aspects of Apple. Think of it this way: Which would likely make front page of the Age/Sydney Morning Herald: headless iMac or iTMS Australia/NZ?

(Given no more tsunamis - and kudos to Apple US for its humanitarian-inspired homepage modification

Gravatar An iTMS would be big news I agree. Probably kill the Telstra and Destra online stores.

But a cheap headless iMac would be big news too. At least, Apple would want it to be. It'd be aimed at the iPod set - a Mac that's a second PC is safer and more palatable way to Switch than ditching Windows in one fell swoop. This is the best and easiest opportunity Apple has had in decades at gaining significant market share quickly.

I agree with the kudos too. Apple US and Australia have devoted their home pages to donating/assisting the tsunami victims. I checked Microsoft's site - they haven't done a thing. And I haven't heard of other big IT players using their sites for this purpose. Way to go!

Gravatar Well - it IS here people. Go to iTunes music store and open up the list of international sites - AUSTRALIA heads the list!

So far it looks like Aus$1.69 per track but haven’t had a good look yet. Videos are up to $3.39.
Albums $16.99. Pixar also $3.39. NO TV episodes yet.

AT LAST!
