May I add another example. When a Palestinian girl filmed an Israeli soldier shooting a bound and blindfolded prisoner in the foot, the IDF reacted by shooting at her house, shattering the windows, and throwing tear gas grenades inside. See it here.

@ David Brin
An endless number, I'd say;)
I'd be interested to see what this blog's great writers suggest, though I thought I'd jump in to suggest two of Norman Finkelstein's:
Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict (Verso; a 3rd edition is supposedly forthcoming late 2009, but Verso has been pushing everything back, and it isn't on the Sep. 2009-March 2010 list just published, so I wouldn't bother waiting around...)
Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History (Verso/UC Press)
Pappe has also written A History of Modern Palestine (Cambridge), but I haven't had time to read the whole thing yet...
I'd be interested to hear what others think. Anyone (apart from the usual suspects) who don't like Finkelstein?

The Case Against Israel/Michael Neumann - Probably the best critique of Israel and Zionism from a liberal perspective.
Image and Reality/Norman Finkelstein - Deals with Benny Morris, Joan Peters and the six day war among other things.
Rise and Fall of Palestine/Finkelstein - Personal account of the first intifada. Also lots of commentary on the Gulf War and the native Americans.
Gun and the Olive Branch/David Hirst - Pretty comprehensive history of the Zionist movement to the mid-70's. I'm a little uneasy with the way he treats the flight of Middle Eastern Jews, though.
Stuff you can find online:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/127484...Myth-of-
Zionism
Really great anti-imperialist critique.
http://www.marxists.de/middleast...dleast/brenner/
Every collusion, successful or aborted, between anti-semites and Zionist figures.
http://www.newjerseysolidarity.o.../
kanafani4.html
Socialist look at the 36-39 revolt. I wish I could suggest more books by Palestinians. Probably should get around to reading Ali Abunimah's.

of course you don't have to be actively or specifically anti-zionist to be aware of cases of state brutality leading to murder and cover ups. take Blair Peach and Ian Tomlinson.
I don't think the UK police are destroying the family homes of their victims yet...not here in the UK anyway. Maybe Iraq or Afghanistan but not in the UK.

Books, oh my god. The embarrassment of riches!
First, Finkelstein, whatever political disagreement you have with him, Image and Reality is a scholarly tour de force. Against Chutzpa is very good and more accessible and directed for a wider audience. Chose what you need.
The question is what do you want to know. There is so much to choose from: Here are a few I recommend.
Nur Masalha, The Expulsion of the Palestinians.
Zeev Sternhell, The Founding myths of Israel
Benny Morris, Israel's Border Wars
Ilan Pappe, The making of the Arab-Israeli Conflict
Nitzan & Bichler, The global political economy of Israel

David, I would also suggest checking out some of the good online resources out there, particularly www.palestineremembered.com, which in addition to a wealth of information and primary sources contains lots of suggestions for further reading.

I'd also suggest Michel Warchawski:
Toward an Open Tomb
On the Border
Less scholarly or academic than those recommended above. But still valuable.

John Rose's 'Myths of Zionism' was good. If you're going to read one book on the one state solution, I'd definitely recommend Virginia Tilley's 'One state solution' over Abunimah's 'One country', although it's not available in paperback. Jonathan Cook's 'Blood and religion', which is mainly about Israel's treatment of Palestinian Israelis and provides insights of broader consequence.
I'm curious, andrew, what you liked about Neumann's book? Neumann's arguments never make sense to me and I didn't think he made much of a case in 'The case against Israel'.

He wrote a lot of gutsy things in that book: even with the Nazis mass immigration to Palestine wasn't a legit reaction; a military coalition against Israel; the hypocrisy of condemning suicide bombings and acquiesing aerial bombings. I think he did an excellent job of explaining how Israel escalated the conflict after 1967.
