sharing your relief at this much belated action by UNICEF Deborah, but I guess we need to be a bit cautious (cynical?) concerning the second half of your sentence... activist pressure that is. I'd be very very interested to know what kinds of discussion preceded this decision and why they took so long. The Leviev case seemed so cut and dry and yet the UNICEF decision makers sure did drag their feet; there's a lot of money and some very big-hitting friends involved in making a resolution like this, so we should probably err on the side of caution here before we pat ourselves too firmly on the back!

oh, and btw, "big hitting friends" was not meant to imply lobbies or plots!! rich diamond merchants tend to have a diverse array of contacts with similarly bottomless pockets and the UN's less funded agencies tend to rely on them; that's all!

Thanks for that uh..clem. I remember Lenni Brenner in the early 1980s laughing out loud (well, in a book he wrote) about how ludicrous Netanyahu was for fraternising with some lunatic moral majority types. Poor Lenni must have thought that it was an aberration at the time. Now they're joined at the hip and the idea that Jews in holocaust Europe had it coming isn't that far from zionist thinking, indeed Eva Figes makes that point in Jah's link.
